Guest guest
I had PSC before I had root canals done. Before my transplant, all the teeth with root canals were removed. No one told me why, I just went along with it because I felt it was a small sacrifice compared to the benefits of receiving a new liver. Even though I have asked several dentists at the University Dental school why that was done, no one had an answer. After reading this, I don't resent the loss of some teeth as much. For those of you waiting for a transplant, or even thinking you might need one someday, check with your transplant team before making any dental decisions, and be specific in asking what future problems may develop. I could have avoided those root canals, but my dentist at the time said it was a more permanent fix then rebuilding the tooth. It was a mistake. While we are on teeth, remember that immunosuppresents can sometimes have a detrimental effect on gums, and if you are taking actonel or boniva, check with the docs before any major dental work, especially something like an extraction, or root canal. I suppose I should make some biting comment about dentists, but I can't think of one. Take Care MizKit Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL.com. Guest guest
Prior to listing, I had to have some dental work done. The choice was two root canals, or take the teeth out. I chose to have the two teeth removed, as they wouldn’t list me until 6 months after the treatments had finished, and that was assuming no problems. Now I have two gaps, way back in my mouth that no-one can see….and it was the best thing I ever did. The dentist said later he could create bridges etc to fill the gaps if I really wanted them, but assuming I ever get a liver, the last thing I want is implants as a source of infection (however careful he is!)
