Guest guest
Jen, Did your child have a hearing test as a newborn? Some hospitals automatically do it a few hours after delivery. CHOP is a great hospital, but there is a SLP at Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh - Hammer who you may want to have your doctors contact regarding apraxia and diagnosing at 14 months old. I had taken my child to an ENT, audiologist and they checked the physical ear. From that point I went for further testing in sound therapy. www.thedaviscenter.com My child is now 9.5 years old and a central auditory processing test (CAP) could not be done until 6, but they did tell me they do work with infants to geriatrics. Start the process of Early Intervention and ask as many questions to the therapists working with your child. Since you are working with an audiologist and there is a hearing problem they might want to correct that before you can proceed with a speech/language evaluation. Occupational therapy is another area I would seek a full eval along with physical therapy evaluation. They will work on global (limb apraxia as well as hypotonia and motor planning issues). I know where you are coming from when you say your child does not babble and just screams. It brings back so many memories when my son was there. I had a complete workup of his blood, stools and urine to see if there was anything toxic in his body. He was put on enzymes, omegas, and probiotics to assist with the leaky gut (internal yeast) and copper overload, zinc deficiency. The copper decreased as I added zinc to his diet. Email me privately mulholland34@... if you have any questions. Good luck! Joanne P.S. Take one step at a time before moving on to your next appointment. Guest guest
To Jen, I dont think you should feel stupid. My son is 4 1/2 yrs and was dx sometime when he was 17 or 18 months? I forget. I still dont know how to explain his sensory issues to others. I understand them after doing a lot of reading, but still need to do a lot of research. My son never talked babbled or anything and he was approaching 13-14month old. We signed him up for early intervention and they came once weekly and to me, it looked like they were playing with toys mostly. they tried to get him to say sounds. The thing I remember most was the terrible tantrums he had between 1-2 yrs old and even going into his 3rd year. Now we realize it was because he could not communicate and because he had sensory problems. We sought 3 different opionions. He went to childrens hospital in boston (I live in NH), he saw a private neurologist, and a private developmental center and was evaluated by the school and easter seals (EI). He has since made major improvements and is talking and getting better every day. We had tons of people say that others in our family didn't talk, or talked later or he'll talk when he's ready etc. Follow your own insights and you can listen to others advice, but in the end, do what you feel is best. That's what we did and are glad we did. Otherwise, I dont think Connor would be where he is today. good luck and always seek lots of opinions. One neurlogist that I saw was horrible and didn't give us the time of day and had no idea what was wrong with Connor and was rude on top of it. However, most of the other doc were nice. Also both peds that Connor has seen had no idea what apraxia was and/or treatment and severity of it, so dont always wait for your regular ped. to come up with suggestions. Good luck, it was a long road. Barb Connor 4.5yrs and Alyssa 2.5yrs (no problems with Alyssa except she is a typical annoying 2.5 yr old!!!!)
