Hi ladies.

I am fairly new to this board but not new to vaginal pain. I have

been skimming and reading over many of your posts and it is so

comforting to know that there are others out there who are

experiencing the same thing and that I am not crazy. I am 27 years

old and over the past 2 1/2 years I have been dealing with chronic

burning and itching. I have seen 7 different gynecologists and have

taken every yeast and bacterial medication that you can possibly

think of and have cried more in the past 2 1/2 years than in my

entire life. Nothing works. Sometimes I believe it is a chronic

yeast/BV problem and other times I believe it is vestibulitis. But,

I don't know and neither do the doctors that I have seen. The last

doctor that I have seen was the first one who actually knew what

vestibulitis was and seems to be familiar with the condition, but I

am still skeptical at this point. I am not 100% confident in her

ability to treat me. She gave me Pramasone to use 3x per day for one

week, then 2x per day for one week, then 1x per day. Is Pramasone

something that I can use indefinitely or is using it for a long

period of time bad?

In your opinions (since I value them more then any of these doctors

that I have seen), does this sound like vestibilitis or can it really

be yeast/BV that just will not go away? My symptoms are vaginal

burning and itching (mainly burning, though). Also, when I have sex

it feels like I am on fire. The rest of the time it feels like the

burning/itching is mainly just under the the lips and just inside the

opening. Alot of the vaginal cultures that I have had either show

yeast or BV- but can the doctors possibly be reading them wrong?

My apologies if this is a little long.

Thank you,

JMD

JMD, when I read your post I felt compelled to respond. Your symptoms and the area that burns and itches you is the same for me. I'm 24 years old and have been battling this vaginal pain since March of 07. I was diagnosed with Vulvar Vestibulitis, Pelvic Floor Dysfunction (PFD) and Atopic Dermatitis. Have you been evaluated for PFD? I've had pain since my first attempt at intercourse but disregarded it because I thought it was normal. March of 07 is when my onset of pain began, in my opinion it was due to repeated use of antibiotics (to treat sterpt throat) which gave me a yeast infection. It was treated with anti-fungal creams and diflucan pills which led to more vaginal infections. The itching and burning would go away temporarily but come back. Almost a month ago I had a yeast infection so horrid that I when I got home from work I was practically confined to the bath tub. I took Claritin for the itch, used Pramasone Hydro mix and took a few diflucan pills. Just when I think I'm on the path to healing, I get a flare-up that lets me know its still around. If you'd like to e-mail me privately feel free to, I hope you have a pain free night. Take care and remember things will get better.

The intermittant burning and itching sounds like part of my disorder. I have

Lichen Planus in addition to the inability to have my husband penetrate

during sex. If anyone needs more info on Lichen Planus please advise.

Pam,

Hmmm I wonder if I have Lichen Planus. What exactly is that and how does a doctor diagnose that? I'm having a biopsy done the middle of July because one of my OBGYN's saw a tiny piece of skin that had a discoloration.

It's a dermatitis of the vaginal area. It comes from inside however it affects you outside. I had the same symptoms you have and I thought I would go crazy. The itching and inflamation was awlful. Mine was detected through biopsy. There is no cure however and you have it for life however you can get it under control with steroids. The doctor perscribes Annusol HD sepositories inserted vaginally twice daily for the first week. Then once daily until the pain subsides for a couple weeks. After that you adjust treatment that will keep you comfortable. On the exterior he perscribed clobatisol, ( forgive the spelling).

What area of the country do you live. I'm in land and my doctor was a specialist in Baltimore that specialized in vulva pain. My regular OBGYN was just scratching his head as to what it was.

Pam,

Good morning I'm very conflicted because now I'm wondering if I have Lichen Planus. The only time I itch is when I believe I have a yeast/bacterial infection, so I go to my NP and she confirms it by looking at the swab under the microscope. Therefore, in your opinion based on what I've told you, do you think I may possibly have LP? I don't have a constant itch on a daily basis. Then when I do have an infection, I itch so badly the skin gets inflammed and I'm burning when I urinate. I think maybe I have chronic yeast, sometimes I think could it be systemic yeast (Candida) that never completely goes away. Then I'm left with inflammation to the tissues/skin that never calms down and my nerves are constantly firing off all day. I have pelvic floor dysfunction as well, so like most of us in the group I have a combination of issues. I'm getting to the point where I'm tired of trying to figure out what the heck is going on, because one doctor says one thing and the next doctor says something different. Grrr makes me want to scream at the top of my lungs! On top of my vulva problems, I've got lower back pain that hurts all day long except when I'm sleeping...fatigue is setting in and setting in badly for me. I take Lodine and Soma (muscle relaxers) and Soma takes the edge off a bit at times. I'm seriously contemplating being put on Neurontin for my PFD and see if it also will help my lower back pain. Any suggestions?

I have lichen planus as well. I didn't really have a lot of itching,

but I had redness/inflammation, pain with sex, yellowish discharge, and

atrophy of tissue (lost my inner labia). I didn't need a biopsy as my

symptoms were so classic. There are many different treatments, not just

one. Lichen planus can also be on your scalp, in your mouth - if you

want the down low, I would join the Yahoo group for Lichen Sclerosis -

they are very active and know tons about LS/LP (the two are closely

related, lichen planus is more rare and harder to treat). Symptoms can

vary a lot - some people have purplish discoloration or white lesions,

but I have neither. Some have itching, some don't. And so on. Email me

off group if you want more info. I was diagnosed by Dr. (the V

Book doctor). I have tried a lot of things from steroids to PT to

topical hormones and diet changes - it's a big puzzle putting together

how to treat these things!

I don't know for sure you have it however the simptoms sound like mine. Didn't ich everyday but when it flared up I scratched untill I broke the skin and burned also upon urination. Like I said in my previous email. Locate a OBGYN that specializes in Vulva pain and have him biopsi for that. Quite a few OBGYN are not familiar with it. That's why I asked where you were from. I could contact my specialist to see if he could recommend one in your area. As far as the candida you can have blood test to see if you have candida.

Pam,

After I sent you the last e-mail, I forgot to tell you where I'm from. I live in California, the bay area an hour away from Sacramento and a little over and hour away from San Francisco...if you could ask your specialist that'd be great. I've seen a Vulvar Specialist Dr.Brodzinsky at Stanford and she wasn't much help in treating me, she just referred me to a physical therapist for PFD. My first appt. she thought I had LS, so she prescribed me Clobetasol to use 2x a day for a month but I only used it 1x a day. I had light tan patches from my lower labia down to my rectal area. While taking Clobetasol I developed a yeast infection, so my in town OBGYN Dr. advised me to stop using it. At my follow-up appt. with Dr.Brodzinsky, she told me my skin drastically changed for the better and she didn't believe I had LS anymore. If I wanted her to do a biopsy she would and I decided not to at the time but I will in July by another OBGYN. Her new diagnosis was Atopic Dermatitis in the form of Eczema which I'm inclined to agree with her because when I was little I had it in my inner thighs, now it could've traveled to the vaginal area. Does the biopsy need to be done in a certain area or how do I have my doctor test for LP?

> ????? Pam,

> Good morning I'm very conflicted because now I'm wondering if I have

Lichen Planus. The only time I itch is when I believe I have a

yeast/bacterial infection, so I go to my NP and she confirms it by

looking at the swab under the microscope. Therefore, in your opinion

based on what I've told you, do you think I may possibly have LP? I

don't have a constant itch on a daily basis. Then when I do have an

infection, I itch so badly the skin gets inflammed and I'm burning when

I urinate. I think maybe I have chronic yeast, sometimes I think?could

it be?systemic yeast (Candida) that never completely goes away. Then I'm

left with inflammation to the?tissues/skin that never calms down and my

nerves are constantly firing off all day. I have pelvic floor

dysfunction as well, so like most of us in the group I have a

combination of issues. I'm getting to the point where I'm tired of

trying to figure out what the heck is going on, because one doctor says

one thing and the next doctor says something different. Grrr makes me

want to scream at the top of my lungs! On top of my vulva problems, I've

got lower back pain that hurts all day long except when I'm

sleeping...fatigue is setting in and setting in badly for me. I take

Lodine and Soma (muscle relaxers) and Soma takes the edge off a bit at

times. I'm seriously contemplating being put on Neurontin for my PFD and

see if it also will help my lower back pain. Any suggestions?

Hi, I do have vulvar lp and the only thing that has really helped me is

using the clobetasol when I am in a flare up. I am very careful and

apply it just to the area that is inflamed. I have it inside my labia

minora and the clitoris. The pain is unbearable if left untreated. My

doctor has also given me a 5% lidocaine mixture which helps

fantastically with the nerve pain. I have had this for over 40 years!

I also use A& D ointment just to relieve some of the burning and pain.

Good luck and we are all supporting you and everyone else.

This doctor seems to be on the right path. Ask her if the dermatitis is similar to lichen planus. If she isn't familiar with it let me know and I'll contact my specialist. The biopsi has to be taken in the vaginal area.

Good luck with that. Let me know how you make out.
