Guest guest
Hi Folks, Can anyone out there share their experience using topical estrogen when yeasts/molds are part of the problem? I've been hesitant to go this route because of potential risks, but yet another flare-up is making me reconsider. Thanks so much, Glomer
Guest guest
It is so great you are thinking ahead. I ended up with yeast infections for a year from using intravaginal estrogen 3x/wk for vag dryness before I (not the Dr.) figured out it was the estrogen giving me the yeast infections. I stopped all estrogen for a long time then went to just putting it in small amounts on my problem areas. So, I think if you don't overdue the estrogen it can help you but when I do have yeast flare ups I stop even using the small amount until more time passes because of my history. > > Hi Folks, > > Can anyone out there share their experience using topical estrogen when yeasts/molds are > part of the problem? Guest guest
Thanks so much for your reply, ! If you don't mind my asking, are your problem areas internal or external? My pain is mostly concentrated on the external portion of the labia minora, so that's where I would focus on applying the estrogen. My doctor said estrogen could both help or hinder in terms of yeast/yeast allergy, but the last thing I want to do is cause more problems (sigh). Guest guest
I have left sided only pain around the Bartholin gland which is the only place I put estrace now. But due to generalized vag dryness, my GYN had me using it with the whole applicator internally. Truly, I had never had a yeast infection until that year and rarely have had them since so I know it was the estrogen. I think as long as you used it externally only in small amounts then your risk is greatly reduced. You might consider doing other things to try to avoid yeast ie take probiotics. I think if you also watch to keep your vag ph in check, I use Rephresh maybe once a week since my last bouts of yeast as it keeps the ph normal. I know people complain of a whitish particle discharge but I only had that in the beginning and it really doesn't bug me when it does happen. Everything is a risk vs benefit so if the estrace helps you then you just have to be more vigilent to avoid yeast. > > > > > > Hi Folks, > > > > > > Can anyone out there share their experience using topical estrogen > > when yeasts/molds are > > > part of the problem? Guest guest
Thanks, , for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I have a hypersensitivity to yeast and an allergy to related molds, so even " normal " levels of these microorganisms cause me trouble. I used Rephresh years ago and was not too put off by the discharge, but doesn't it contain glycerin? For me, anything sugar-like = disaster. Thanks again, Glomer > > > > > > > > Hi Folks, > > > > > > > > Can anyone out there share their experience using topical > estrogen > > > when yeasts/molds are > > > > part of the problem? Guest guest
I never use anything containing glycerin in that area because glycerin is very sweet and although it is a by-product of the soap making industry I am sure it would promote yeast infections. Glycerin also leaves a sticky residue which I don't like. I use Slippery Stuff for lubrication as it does not contain anything like that. Estrace cream does contain glycerin. Guest guest
I don't know if it has glycerin, I'll check the box. I was just thrilled it didn't bother me. I had tried boric acid many years ago but the dose was the full 600mg in capsules and it did burn so I couldn't continue. However, my gyn recently gave me an RX for Boric acid in suppositories as 300 mg and she suggested I cut that in half and try them and see how I do. I havn't done that yet but she said that the suppositories kinda melt rather than burst all at once like the capsules so that it might be less irritating. You might try boric acid that way, do it once or twice a week just to keep things in check. I bought ph paper from the vitamin shop and test my vag ph regularly to make sure it 4.5-5 which is normal as a quick check to make sure I don't have BV which the ph would more likely be about 5- 6. With yeast, the ph will still be low so the knowing the ph won't rule yeast out. I guess if you are super sensitive, you might want to start with a mini dap of estrace from a q tip and see how it goes. The body can be so super sensitive sometimes one would think just thinking about a problem can set things off. Good luck. -- In VulvarDisorders , " glomer1977 " wrote: > > Thanks, , for the suggestions. Guest guest
-You can get estrace type cream compounded by a compounding pharmacy if you are sensitive then there is no glycerin. -- In VulvarDisorders , taurusrc@... wrote: > > I never use anything containing glycerin in that area because glycerin is very > sweet and although it is a by-product of the soap making industry I am sure it > would promote yeast infections. Guest guest
I have only ever had one yeast infection. I am convinced that it was caused by using a heavy-duty tampon at the end of my period. I inserted the thing but my period was already over although I didn't realize it. I had a good deal of trouble trying to remove it because my vagina was so dry. When I finally was able to remove it I was rather sore and developed a raging yeast infection. I never had another period. They had been normal up until that time. I was 43. Guest guest
Hi Ora, I was curious about your saying you finished menopause at age 43. Isn't that very early? Did you ever wonder about why or get an explanation? Boy are you lucky to have not had the yeast! I am glad for you. Arline
Guest guest
I always blamed it on that danged tampon and the yeast infection because it happened at the same time and it was the only y.i. I ever had. But realistically I cannot figure out how that could be the cause.
