Guest guest
Barb, I learned, after the fact, that incisional hernias can be quite common (soon) after transplantation. Jim had a humdinger (which wouldn’t have been nearly so bad, IMHO, if he had been compliant about NOT exercising too soon – he did all kinds of leg lifts & sit ups with his new-found energy, against doctor’s orders… whenever my back was turned! He was even doing leg-lifts in surgical ICU!!!). Silly guy, he treated his as a dog ‘n’ pony show (making the kids go “ewwwwwww”) until he showed his doctor at clinic, who said “don’t DO that!” USC’s protocol on incisional herniation surgical repair was to not consider surgery until roughly a year later. There are several reasons for that ideology (initial post-tx drug regimens, which frequently include prednisone, can impact healing, for instance). Jim had to wait until January of ’03 (about 13 months after his 12/7/01 transplant) for his procedure. We went up to USC at oh-dark-thirty, they checked him in, the surgery went like clockwork, he had a one-night-stay, and we were home the next day. Jim had no complaints of pain or discomfort (then again, he’s Captain America), & there’s been no recurrence. Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy. HTH, thinking of Ken & all of you, & wishing you all the best! If so, could you please tell me about your experience? How long after your transplant surgery did they wait to repair it? How long were you in the hospital? Was there much pain? How long was your recovery? Has it reoccurred? With love, Barb in Texas - Together in the Fight, Whatever it Takes!
