I know that these ESE teachers are required to attend training seminars in effective, research-based teaching modalities on a regular basis, along with inservice training covering several subjects. Please see if you can arrange an interview with School Administration. Perhaps send a group e-mail to denise's list asking if anyone knows of students who have sent their child to Sawgrass. Hopefully you will get several responses thereby getting a clearer picture of the school. Most importantly, ask questions about how their (or any other) school will help your son improve his independent functioning, and grow academically, behaviorally, and socially, with respect to his PDD. I am the mother of a boy (now teenager) who is SLD, and I am also an ESE teacher. I remember visiting several schools (now nearly 10 years ago), often ending with confusion and frustration. With perseverance, we found a school that fit his needs. His school recognized he has an aptitude to draw and create artwork in 3 dimensions. We put him in the Architecture track at this school, in which he excelled. He is now a graduate and hoping to study architecture in college. He is aware of his disability and continues to learn how to work around these limitations to reach his goal. This struggle is by far not over. We just take it a day at a time. Good luck to you
