Guest guest
My daughter took Risperdal and gained a lot of weight...she was an adult when taking it. In my opinion there are better drugs such as lamictal but that takes longer to get it to the right dose. Hang in there we are here for you. Guest guest
My friend's son was on this and she says that she didn't see much help in controlling her son's aggression while he was on it. He gained a lot of weight, and she attributes the fact that her son is now a diabetic to the fact that he was on risperdal. When she took her son off of this medicine, he lost a lot of weight and while he is still a diabetic, his sugar levels are evening out. She says she will never put her son on that medicine again. Guest guest
My daughter was prescribed risperdol for mood disorder when she was about 6. At the time, she had been diagnosed as bipolar. She became very aggressive. . . Almost like a wild animal. She was taken off after 2 weeks and immediately went back to her previous behaviour. She finally improved when given Zoloft. Turns out she was not bipolar. A word of caution. . . All our children are different. Some children may respond very well to a medication while others do not. Someone once gave me the example of blood pressure medication. .. When a person is placed on blood pressure meds, it can often take months to find the right medication and dosage before they see positive results. Make sure you trust the doctor and that the doctor takes the time to answer all your questions. If you are not comfortable, find a doctor who Will take that time. These are serious medications and you deserve to have your questions answered. Hang in there. Jean Eccleston Sent from my Samsung Captivate on AT & T " Extraspecialkids@... Guest guest
We used risperdal on our son for almost 8 years when he was young(age 4)...mainly for aggression. With a strong behavioral component- it worked wonderful. We went off for awhile and now we have returned to using risperdal once again(he is now 17). I think for our son, it has worked very well...no side effects. You may need to play around with the dosage. Initially,(first 1-2 days) your child may be drowsy....but that goes away. Also, my son never slept when he was young so this was a LIFE saver. Hope this helps! Guest guest
My son has been on it for about 3 years for impulse control and aggression. It has really changed his life in a positive way. He has gained weight, however but he is monitored closely. We took him off of it at one point and all of the bad stuff came back.Sent from my iPhonePlease excuse typos We used risperdal on our son for almost 8 years when he was young(age 4)...mainly for aggression. Guest guest
Hello everyone. I agree with Jean - all of our children's medical needs are different. I learned this 15 years ago when our son was diagnosed with Autim. Others in his classroom had great success with Ritalin.....one dose and our entire family was awake for 48 hours! This was definitely not the right medication for our son. We had to try many prescribed meds before finding one that would "work". Risperdal has been of tremendous help with our son. He has been taking it for years and we adjust the dosage as needed. Our goal is to give him the minimum dosage that is possible as to aid in his behavior. My best to all of you as you are struggling with prescribed medications. Do be very honest with your child's doctor and make notes of your child's reactions to each one you try. For some, it does take several weeks before you will see any "real" change. Others get into your child's system very quickly. Guest guest
My son is using Risperdal for 5 years and is the only medication that control his hyperactivity and irritability. We tried to change the therapy one summer and it was terrible. My son eats well and I provide healthy snacks to control his weight.
