Guest guest
Recently I went to a Ob-gyn's office to have my annual pap test and I was given an option to have a test for HPV as well which I agreed to. A week later the office called to say they did see HPV and to come back in 6 months for a repeat test to see if it had cleared up. I have been married for 29 years, we've both have been faithful to each other, and I was totatally shocked. I know it will show up again in 6 months since I've likely had it for 29+ years-I've never had an abnormal pap but wonder if this vulvar inflammation could have anything to do with HPV. At one time I had pre-cancerous cells but that cleared up and I was checked with a vinegar solution and many biopsies. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Guest guest
Kathy, In my understanding (I'm not a doc) HPV can lay dormant for years and then flare up during times of stress due to a less than effective immune system (compromised by stress). Most times HPV is taken care of by your body, which is why some docs do watchful waiting. HOwever, having vulvodynia would make me suspicous and wonder if it plays a role in your vulvar pain despite having negative paps for many years. If it was me, I would ask that the HPV be treated Take care, Lindsey
Guest guest
Hi Kathy, I'm also no doctor, but I had HPV years ago, and I know some researchers suspect it in the development of vulvar pain (you can search the archives for articles--most of the references I saw were in materials from the Vulvar Pain Foundation). Be aware that certain treatments, such as the application of TCA, are quite caustic and may aggravate your pain. I was actually able to get my HPV to resolve by taking a foul-tasting herbal formula prepared by Eclectic Institute and using vaginal suppositories of vitamin A. The formula had to be requested by my homeopath at the time, but I wrote down the ingredients and ratios in case I ever had another HPV/abnormal pap diagnosis--perhaps you could get an herbalist to make it up for you: Condyloma Formula thuja – 2 parts echinacea – 3 parts hydrastis canadensis – 1 part lingusticum porteri – 2 parts (My former partner and I both took two tablespoons each, morning and evening for several months.) I hope this helps! Glomer > > Recently I went to a Ob-gyn's office to have my annual pap test and I was given an option to have a test for HPV as well which I agreed to. Guest guest
Hi Lindsey, Thank you and others for your response to my concerns about the HPV. I don't believe there is a treatment for it though unless you have an abnormal pap and then you could have a leep procedure(?) or cone biopsy. I think I'll go to another gyn soon just to make sure I don't have pre-cancer in the vulva area. I was fine until I was about 50 and starting menopause and I then turned red on 2 strips of the vulva and although it's not terribly painful like some of you it always feels irritated especially on a lesion that I'm told is healthy tissue but hymen residue.
