Guest guest
Is Spectrum high lignon flaxseed oil good for making salad dressing? Will it be harmful in any way or just not the best I could use? Thanks, Joy

She added Enig suggests taking no more than one teaspoon a day of flaxseed oil in any form. I used to take Barlean's flax oil, but now I grind up the flax seed and add it to my salad or morning shake. This way I feel I get the freshest source possible. I am sure other people may be able to advise you better on brands. All my best, Sheila

Joy, I personally wouldn't use flaxseed oil unless it's used very sparingly. A small amount mixed in with another oil such as extra virgin olive oil, sesame oil or avocado oil wouldn't be bad, but in my opinion flax isn't a great way to get your omega 3 fats. While there is supposedly some value to the ALA form of omega 3 that flax provides, most of the omega 3 need in humans is for the DHA and EPA forms. The body *can* convert from ALA to the other two, but the conversion rate isn't very good. You're much better off getting your *supplemental* omega 3 EFAs from animal sources such as *high quality* cod liver and fish body oils. If you use whole nuts, seeds, greens, etc you'll still be getting some of the ALA form anyway. There's certainly nothing wrong with adding a small amount of flax oil to another oil for salads, but *certainly* don't use it on it's own or in large quantity. Since omega 3 and omega 6 fats are highly unstable, you don't want to consume too many of them or it increases the body's oxidative burden...which requires more antioxidants to keep up. As for the quality of Spectrum's oil, I'm not sure. It seems OK to me, but I don't have any objective basis for saying that it's better or worse than any others.
