Guest guest
Hi everyone, I have posted this question before but didn't get any answer. Maybe it is just too basic and seems unimportant. My son is currently on Super EPA by thorne which contains 425 mg of EPA and 270 mg of DHA. The capsules are humangous and I want to switch to something else. I started reading about the fish oils and some recommend Cod liver oil and some recommend Omega 3 combinations. How do you figure out what is right for your kid? We have never tried Cod liver oil but have tried children's DHA from nordic naturals and then super Epa by thorne. Is it a good idea to try Cod liver oil? I have never noticed any speech gain or other benefits from the omega combinations I have tried. Is it because our children specifically need Cod liver oil? Also I need to know which brand is the best. Any input from expert moms will be appreciated. Thanks is

Guest guest
When my son could take cod liver oil liquid, he took the Kirkman lemon-lime liquid to provide EPA, DHA, and vitamin A and D. He needs a decent maintenance dose of A. But when he could no longer take liquid and I had to switch him to capsules, I had to add in another brand of oil in addition to the Kirkman oil. While the Kirkman capsules have a statement on their website claiming they supplement EPA and DHA, the actual nutrition label on the website and the bottle doesn't list EPA or DHA. My doctor said they lose the EPA and DHA when they put it in the capsules. I'm not sure why. Anyway, so we give Nordic Naturals 3*6*9 Junior for EPA and DHA and Kirkman cod liver oil for a natural source of daily vitamin A. I think you hear so much about cod liver oil because of Dr. Megson's work with vitamin A. The high dose protocol is done with mycellized vitamin A palmitate, but the maintenance dose is done with cod liver oil. Both of these brands have smaller capsules that are easy for my son to swallow. He takes four Kirkman capsules and two NN capsules each day. He is not required to take really high doses of EPA and DHA, just a maintenance dose, so I am not sure what your child would need in the NN. Some children take higher doses to reduce inflammation. Hope that helps, Cathy > > Hi everyone, > I have posted this question before but didn't get any answer. Maybe it is just too basic and seems unimportant. Guest guest
Every child should have a trial of Cod Liver Oil. It's pretty basic and one of the few supplements that has ever helped my tough nut. We use Nordic Naturals flavored. Additionally, he get Coromega twice a day. Guest guest
is, With fish oils, I saw speech only when I gave dose of EPA of about 1 gm per day. The speech gains were seen within a week. My son cannot swallow capsules, so I bite the tip of capsules, pour the liquid in a spoon and give him. Barleans and country life have fish oils with EPA over 1 gm per day with 2 capsules. I had earlier used 5ml of Nutrasea ascenta + 6 caps of EyeQ per day to get a total of 1 gm EPA. You can try increasing the dosage of the thorne fish oil and see if it helps >> Hi everyone,> I have posted this question before but didn't get any answer. Guest guest
Thanks Navina! I am getting inclined towards using both cod liver oil and supplementing omegas separately to bring dose to a higher number of EPA. The problem with thorne is the capsule is humangous and my son is swallowing it fine but gets a lot of hiccups after that. The other caps in the market have pork or beef gelatin which I don't use. So liquid is the best option as my son doesn't mind it at all. I may have to use two products though to get both cod liver oil and higher epa and dha. Guest guest
Yes, that will be good also. That way you will get some Vit A and D also with the omegas. I was using 5ml of Blue ice FCLO for a while with a cap of country life mood. Subject: Re: Can I please get an answer? Guest guest
I was using the blue ice FCLO for a while. The issue(in addition to its expense), is that they dont list in the bottle label how much of EPA and DHA , Vit A and D is there in the product, though they have mentioned some rough calculation in their site. I think I read that it differs between bottles and based on the date of packaging, extraction etc which is why its not mentioned in the label..However I used it since it was soy free and fermented is thought to be more absorbed by the body. Guest guest
Hi is, Well, it sounds like your son could definitely use the natural A in the cod liver oil along with the DHA and EPA. We have only used Kirkman brand of cod liver oil. The liquid does have EPA and DHA in it, but I don't know if the amount is as high as you want it. Here is the one I used to use before I switched to capsules: http://kirkmanlabs.com/ProductKirkman/266/1/CodLiverOilLiquid-LemonLimeFlavor/ If you haven't looked into it, you might also want to try the high dose vitamin A protocol. Many people find that it gets rid of visual stims. It worked for us. My son used to side glance all the time. He would watch lines out of the side of his eyes on tables, etc. He would also do visual stims " opening and closing " his hands together in front of his eyes and liked to watch doors open and close, too. These stims went away after doing the high dose vitamin A protocol and then keeping him on 5,000 iu of vitamin A per day. We did the high dose vitamin A protocol quite a few times before we stopped seeing direct gains from it. Our doctor okayed us to do it every six weeks. After we stopped seeing the gains, we have still kept him on the maintenance dose of 5,000 iu per day. He has been on it a couple years and has never shown any signs of vitamin A toxicity. One time, a long time ago, we ran out of CLO and while we were waiting for it to come in, his visual stims came back. Doing the high vitamin A protocol and bringing his CLO back in got rid of the stims again and we haven't seen them since. Vitamin A can be depleted by the measles virus (probably because it is used by the body to fight the virus), but our doctor (Dr. Berger) also recommends it as a general anti-viral treatment. He always recommends the high dose vitamin A protocol at the beginning of a viral infection. Here is an article about the protocol: http://chapmannd.com/uploads///Vitamin%20A%20in%20autism.pdf She recommends the dose be divided into three times per day, but we always did it in two (two 100,000 iu doses per day for two days.) Here is the article about Dr. Megson's work that explains why our kids may need vitamin A in the natural cis form (like from cod liver oil) and why vitamin A palmitate may not be effective enough. Of course, when doing the high vitamin A protocol, we cannot do it with CLO because we cannot give that much CLO to acheive the amount of vitamin A needed. http://legacy.autism.com/treatable/supplement/megson.htm So, I would recommend using the CLO, at least for a trial and adding something additional for EPA/DHA if you feel he needs more than what he can get in your CLO dose. We were fine with the Kirkman dose (1 tsp) which provided the 5,000 iu of vitamin A and 500 mg of EPA and 500 mg of DHA. We only added in the Nordic Naturals when we had to switch to the Kirkman capsules because he couldn't tolerate the liquid anymore. But again, we only need a healthy general maintenance dose of EPA and DHA and aren't trying to reduce inflammation with it. Cathy > > Thanks ! My son probably has inflammation, he gets seasonal allergies but he also has visual stims and lack of focus. He does look from different angles sometimes and seems to have a lazy eye although as per ophthalmologist it is not measurable. What would you recommend in his case? Guest guest
Awww...you are too sweet. Love you, too. No, I am not amazing. I've just been at this awhile and have a ridiculously large " favorites " list in my browser. I have been in major learning mode, too. I have been learning from Dr. Amy Yasko (her book, DVD, website, and forum community.) I think I am growing new neurons just learning from her. Haha. But it is incredibly helpful information. I totally get you on the excited part. I get so excited learning new stuff that is so meaningful and useful!! Cathy > > Oh Cathy! You are amazing. Thank you for all the detail.
