Hi , My understanding of this is: , like Ken, already have their portal veins completely blocked off. But in neither case, is the blood supply to the liver “completely blocked”, (they would be in complete liver failure if it was) the blood still flows through the hepatic artery and collaterals. Both are on blood thinners, and Ken’s doctor doesn’t “expect” more clots to follow. This is an important distinction, and probably why UNOS wouldn’t be in a hurry to give extra points…… if the liver is working – even at limited capacity, why give extra points? (That’s not me saying that, but UNOS.) We spoke to Ken’s transplant surgeon yesterday, he said Ken will have to go through another evaluation, (probably not the same evaluation as before, but still go through some of the paces.) He said Ken would indeed be re-listed, but wasn’t sure how long Ken could go before *needing* a new liver. It could be 1-5 years, it could be tomorrow, so re-listing made sense for Ken’s doctor.
