herbals vs. homeopathics

I'm starting the messages about these and I'm seeing that people are confusing

herbal medications with homeopathic medications. Herbals are extracts and plant

products to treat certain ailments. A trained herbalist will know how to use

these but they could be dangerous. I had a reaction years ago to a common

herbal medication after two doses (as suggested on the bottle)- I had an

abnormal heart rhythm for several weeks. It resolved itself but I read later

that some people reacted that way and had permanently changed cardiac rhythms.

Caution and education must be used when using herbals.

That being said, homeopathic medications are dilute. The higher the

number, the more dilute and homeopathic practioners believe, the more potent the

product. For instance, substance 16x versus 30x. The substance 16 times means

one drop of the actual herbal preparation is mixed into a gallon of water. One

drop is extracted from that gallon and placed into another gallon. One drop of

that is placed into another gallon, 16x. It is believed that only the

" electronic signature " of the chemical remains and therefore, the product is so

dilute that it cannot hurt a person. 30x means the drop-into-a--gallon was done

30 times. Again, the more dilute, the more powerful, practioners believe.

One could take a bottle of homeopathics and technically, they are taking no

actual chemical. This is why it is considered safe. This is not saying that

homeopathics are ineffective; I believe they are useful when one knows what one

is taking.

This is my understanding after several classes about the subjects.

Glad you brought up this interesting topic.

I agree with what you said, but it is my understanding that herbals can include

" kitchen remedies " . i.e. honey and lemon to soothe a sore throat. Carrots and

pasta to aid in slowing/ curing diarrhea, etc.

Homeopathic being something prepared in a specific manner or dose so as to help

someone suffering with a specific malady. Usually for relief and not necessarily

as a cure. People who use these often start w/ 1/2 a dose and move up to a full

dose. They also have to pay close attention to how their bodies react to the

homeopathic.

Herbal medicine is more informal in that it is the use of plants, herbs, shells,

tusks, bee products, etc. Many of our prescribed medicines are derived from this

type of medicine and they are often passed through generations of people or from

a region or tribe. They bind to receptors in the body and USUALLY contain

features that already occur naturally in the body in some form or other. If they

are improperly prepared, adulterated etc. they can cause serious harm. Lack of

proper understanding of what the product should be used for and use with certain

prescribed meds. can have serious adverse affects too. As to the dilutions: Each

dilution followed by succussion is assumed to increase the effectiveness of a

homeopathic.

Everglades college in Boca has a whole program on herbal and homeopathic

medicines. I go to a chiropractor who also works w/ homeopathic remedies, and

some of them contain what we would normally think of as poison,(such as

belladonna, but the dose is so diluted or so minimal that the body doesn't react

adversely).

You are right these can all have bad side affects, especially if the person

taking herbals or homeopathic meds is on a prescribed medicine. i.e. valerian

and vervain shouldn't be taken w/ Depakote (valporic acid) as it can cause

rages, heart rhythm issues, and hallucinations.) As with anything we put in or

on our bodies we should use care.
