New Clinic Taking Referrals in Late August The Interdisciplinary Center for Evaluation and Intervention (ICEI) is one of five Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources (FDLRS) specialized university clinics located at the University of South Florida in the College of Behavioral and Community Sciences. Funded by the Florida Department of Education, the Center’s purpose is to provide evaluation and intervention services to school-aged children and youth (ages 3 through 21) who have complex social/emotional, behavioral, medical, and learning difficulties. The Center offers comprehensive diagnostic evaluations, consultation, and intervention supports, family and in-service presentations, and practicum training for graduate students. The Center engages in interdisciplinary teamwork with professional representation from the disciplines of family, psychology, behavior analysis, education, pediatrics, psychiatry, communication sciences, and social work. The specialization areas of ICEI are behavioral, autism, and co-morbid evaluations and interventions. In the area of behavior, the ICEI collaborates with school and family-based teams to facilitate person-centered plans, conduct functional behavior assessments, assist with building support plans, and provide coaching support so that the plan is implemented with fidelity. Diagnostic evaluations for autism and co-morbid conditions include comprehensive assessments using evidence-based practices and strategies. The ICEI will begin taking referrals from school districts, families, and agencies in late August. For further information on the Center, please contact Dr. Rose Iovannone at or Iovannone@.... Compound Family Caregivers: Overlooked and Overburdened A recently published FCIC white paper, authored by Perkins, Ph. D., is focused on the challenges encountered by older caregivers of adults with intellectual disabilities when they are simultaneously caregiving for other aging family members. The white paper is an attempt to alert policy makers and service providers alike of this emerging trend among lifelong family caregivers and offers recommendations for how to increase the availability of supports to assist these very dedicated but overburdened individuals. The White Paper can be downloaded here: http://flfcic.fmhi.usf.edu/docs/FCIC_ CompoundCaregivers_070811.pdf New RtI Family and Community Engagement Workgroup The Florida Problem-Solving/Response to Intervention (FL PS/RtI) and the Florida Positive Behavior Support: Response to Intervention for Behavior (FLPBS:RtIB )Project are statewide projects that have been providing technical assistance and training to Florida schools on the implementation of a multi-tiered system of student supports (MTSSS). MTSSS is an educational service delivery model that provides intervention and educational support to all students at increasing levels of intensity based on their individual needs. It is important that all key stakeholders, including families and community members, receive accurate and timely information about this new way of work in education in order to prevent and clarify any existing misunderstandings about MTSSS implementation. The Family and Community Engagement Workgroup was formed as a result of collaborative efforts between the two Projects to help provide Florida families and community organizations with timely information, resources, and training materials regarding MTSSS. The workgroup will develop resources to increase the capacity of districts and schools to engage families and community members in collaborative, data-based problem-solving. The scope of the workgroup will be two-fold: (1) to develop partnerships and communication networks with state and district agencies and community groups to share resources and training materials on MTSSS and, (2) to provide technical assistance to district teams on the use of resources and materials within a systemic problem-solving process.
