VSL#3 is a mega dose probiotic. My hepatologist wasn't okay with me taking

it, since he's very concerned with liver toxity, and he knew nothing about

it. VSL#3 is over the counter (you have to ask the pharmacist for it - it's

refrigerated and behind the counter). It's between $75 to $150 for a month

depending on how much you take. Since it's OTC, insurance doesn't cover it

(at least my insurance doesn't cover it).

I doubt your doctor will want you to go off all meds. Most UC meds are

maintenance meds so you don't get a flare up. It takes about 3 weeks or more

for them to become effective. That means, if you get a flare, you'll

probably need to go on prednisone to deal with the flare up immediately. Or

worse, you can get a really nasty & life-threatening flare that goes into a

toxic megacolon (that happened to me in 1977). Basically, it's important to

be on maintenance meds for UC so you don't get a flare up. I almost died

from the toxic megacolon - I can't even begin to describe how awful it was.
