Guest guest
What dose of Coumadin are you on? Ken started at 3 mg, than 6mg, last week 8mg and today his INR is still 1.4, so they are upping the dose to 10mg. He can’t stop the Lovenox until his INR comes up, but I worry about his taking Coumadin in the first place, let alone a bigger dose. Anyone have any wisdom on taking it? Now Medicare says they won’t pay for any more Lovenox. Which I guess means unless we can reverse their decision, we owe them about $5,000. plus + what he’s getting refilled today. Ugh, always something. I called the coordinator, just don‘t want to mess with it. I need a wife to handle this stuff! With love, Barb in Texas - Together in the Fight, Whatever it Takes! Guest guest
Barb, I'm taking warfarin daily, because I had several DVTs in the past. I presently take 5 mg per day and have a blood test every 4-6 weeks. My dose went up to 5 mg from 3.5 mg when I had to start synthroid. I'm not familiar with Lovenox is it just a brand of warfarin or is it something your taking as well? The 5 mg of warfarin I'm taking just cost me about $0.60 / day (no drug plan). At that rate it would take me over twenty years to spend $5000. Ian (51) PSC 89 What dose of Coumadin are you on? Guest guest
Barb - Coumadin is an extremely individualized medication, plus it varies within each individual. So monitoring the INR is an on-going challenge. Some people can take what seems like forever to get to the therapeutic/effective INR range. Others, a little Coumading and their INR is much too effective (blood too thin). Then there are folks who are on the same dose for long-time, very stable, then for some reason, the INR bounces around. And others tend to bounce around much of the time. I work with lots of older adults on Coumadin - it is an on-going effort that you just "tweak" the dosage around to keep within the therapeutic range. Many clinics have a Coumadin Clinic where there is staff that just deals with Coumadin - this is nice in that the Coumadin Clinic staff learns each persons individuality. Good luck. At least Ken won't need the Lovenox shots (many people say it "stings" abit). Guest guest
> > What dose of Coumadin are you on? > Barb, I am on 35 mg of warfarin a day and my INR is still only 1.5, they had me on lovenox for 2 months (ouch, one big black and blue tummy), I have a couple of different hematologists and they have both suggested that I stop warfarin and just do the shots, but I am REALLY trying to put them off (I also have a vena cava filter).
