My 20 year old son just got diagnosed with mono. I was wondering if

anyone in the group had ever had mono and if it complicated the psc

problem. Any feedback would be appreciated. I'm also concerned

because he's on prednisone and Aleve which can't be great for the

liver. Thanks.

Joan,

When Noah was diagnosed he had reactivated EBV. This meant that he had

had it before and was in the acute stage of another round. This made

his AST and ALT and GGT go sky high. I can get you numbers if you

wish. But this is how we finally got a liver biopsy because they

didn't understand what was going on and had given him 6 weeks to " chill

out " and let the numbers come down while our doc was in France.

They only went higher... like doubling daily at one point.

So... I think it is recoverable for sure...but I think it takes its

toll on the patient. Noah never bounced back energy wise after that. :

Hi Joan,

I was diagnosed with mono shortly before getting PSC. The test for mono

showed that I " was exposed and had mono " but did not have it at the

time of the test. It was weird. Lets talk more about this.

I had mono last year, and although it didn't complicate the PSC, the

side effects from one of the pain meds nearly killed me.

Toradol is a very powerful nsaid/pain killer. I was given Toradol IVs

in the emergency room when the mono-related pain was intolerable, and

they sent me home with a prescription for Toradol pills. As a pain

killer, it was great...pain relief without fogging up my head. But,

like any nsaid, it can weaken blood vessels. In my case, UC was

flaring up, and the toradol found a weak spot in my colon. That led

to a burst artery, and I nearly bled out.

A week in ICU and nine units of blood later, I was OK.

So, be watchful of the painkillers your son gets. If he has any bowel

disease at all, or any nsaid sensitivity, keep away from those kinds

of painkillers.

Hi Lee,

Doesn't seem fair that these kids should also get mono! Glad to hear that Bill is doing better. had a painful initial crisis stage with the mono but they put him on prednisone and he says that he feels just fine. I hope so, because he's in the middle of making a film and doing a small documentary for his local public radio station plus he's crewing for two other people's films. He is clearly pushing himself and I'm worried but powerless to do anything. He says that he's getting extra sleep but who knows. I thought (and you've confirmed) that the mono might affect the liver enzymes which is really too bad since they've been normal since he started the Urso. Was Bill's liver doctor concerned about the mono and resulting raised enzymes?

By the way, I hope that you're enjoying your new life in Florida.

Joan
