Hey, guys, Molly??

I need help. How do you get Lymes disease diagnosed?

My daughter's bf has some very alarming symptoms. Someone told him

that there was no definitive diagnosis for Lymes.

Can you point me to what the procedure is? Is Lymes a pathogen? Does

your immune system produce antibodies? How do they tell if you have it?

Thank you

Hi ,

Diagnosis is made clinically, but I also received positive results via Igenex's

Western Blot

tests (IgG and IgM), which visualize the antibodies the body produces in

response to the

lyme bacteria (Igenex is one of the premiere tick-borne disease testing labs in

the

country. No test is perfect, but the ELISA test is completely unreliable, as is

the " bullseye

rash, " which only appears in a minority of cases.) If your daughter's boyfriend

was bitten

recently, he needs to be treated with antibiotics immediately by a lyme-literate

physician;

if he was bitten or may have been bitten in the past, treatment protocols vary

and are

controversial (as you can see from the archives).

Hope this helps!

Hi --

It's true that there is currently no test that can definitively

diagnose Lyme. Up to 50% of people who have it will not test positive.

I can't get to far into it right now because I have homework to do,

but I suggest starting here:

http://www.ilads.org/

You will need to find an " LLMD " or Lyme Literate Medical Doctor. The

awareness that regular doctors, including infectious disease docs, is

equivalent or worse than they have for pelvic pain and V. issues.

I urge you to really look into this and get him to an LLMD ASAP

because the more time that passes the worse it is going to get and

harder to cure. If you see a regular doc they'll give him 3 weeks of

Doxy and say he's fine, which is far from the truth.

I'm sure Hollis and others will chime in.

Oh yeah, and there is a documentary that recently came out.

,To reinforce/add to what and glomer have said --Time is of the essence when it comes to Lyme. With a good lyme literate MD (LLMD),the chances of a newly acquired infection resolving are very good. The more timegoes by, the more likely there can be chronic problems. And believe me, assomeone who's life has been horribly impacted by Lyme that was undiagnosed forliterally decades, he doesn't want that to happen, if at all possible. To make things more complicated, there's not just Lyme infection, which is caused by aspirochetal bacteria that's related to syphilis; there are also often co-infections which cancause additional issues. All the more reason to find a good LLMD. I'd suggest thatdirect your daughter's bf to lymenet.org. Under " flash discussion " on the menu on the left, you'll be directed to what is a very large and active support group. If youpost under " Seeking a physician, " giving your location, you're sure to get responses.Just so you know, people posting there do not spell out LLMD's names, but, rather giveinitials (Dr. K in _____) in an effort to protect them, since so many LLMD's are being persecuted (and prosecuted!) for going against the " party line " when itcomes to Lyme diagnosis and treatment. It's infuriating and sick, but that's the wayit is. So, chances are, you'll get pm's with full information.Hope this helps.HollisHi -- It's true that there is currently no test that can definitively diagnose Lyme.
