Guest guest
Hello, I don't know how common it is to use the terms " high functioning " or " low functioning " when referring to our children. I'm sure it's standard, as people are trying to understand ASD, schools, how our children function, etc. I want to propose a change, even just in our community. " High " and " low " are labels that may make children feel worse about themselves (they are bound to hear the words) or make parents feel badly. Terms I wanted to propose are " easier functioning " and " harder functioning. Or " more challenged " or " less challenged " . There are many bright children out there who cannot talk, or children with good eye contact who cannot keep a conversation, all on the spectrum. To use the term " low functioning " certainly may make a parent feel badly. That's my two cents' worth. What do others think? I find the use of high and low to be almost competitive and wondered if a change would be welcome. Khat
