Guest guest
I drove by a school in Boynton Beach called Sunset Palms and the school was reminding parents of the upcoming cirriculm. night by categorizing them as " kindergarten to 2nd grade and ASD classes will have their night on Wednesday at 6:00 P.M. Isn't that terrible since many of the kids are getting mainstreamed and those classes have to be labelled as ASD to the neighborhoon in Boynton Beach! Guest guest
I'm sorry they have to do it that way but let me tell you that I know working for the district last year by far that school is the best school I have ever had the pleasure knowing in West Palm. I can tell you the teachers all know their stuff. The ESE contact is an amazing person who really cares for those kids. Its probably coming from other individuals and or reasons why they are doing it that way. I know some of my babies which I treated last year were going to kinder there and I saw the program. And as a professional and also a parent I was very relieved knowing they were going there. One of the reasons I left my District position was because of the legality about the job. So don't blame the school it really is good. aka Enzos momConnected by MOTOBLUR™ on T-Mobile Elementary school in Palm Beach County LAbels ASD classes on Billboard to Public I drove by a school in Boynton Beach called Sunset Palms and the school was reminding parents of the upcoming cirriculm. night by categorizing them as " kindergarten to 2nd grade and ASD classes will have their night on Wednesday at 6:00 P.M. Guest guest
You are right. Don't know the teachers or ESE but someone such as an administrative secretary most likely posted the memo-an innocent mistake; however, there is a lack of understanding that many people have since they have never had the experience of living with autism. Guest guest
It is terrible to segregate a group of students based on any factor. ASD kids should be there on the same night as the rest of the booger eating K-2nd graders. I know there are many parents who run from the diagnosis and fear the labels, but it doesn't bother me one bit. Categorizing and compartmentalizing is just how the human brain works. I have never been ashamed of my child's autism and I talk about it with anyone who will listen to me. Zander will certainly recognize that there are marked differences between he and his classmates so it is not like I could hide it even if I wanted to. But the way the school in Boynton Beach segregated the ASD students to their own night goes directly against the inclusion model. Guest guest
not to throw you off what you believe is an inclusion model. I worked for 8 different schools in West Palm Beach as a District contract employee. Im going to tell you the inclusion model does not work. Our education system is failing on non autistic children. Then throw in some Autistic kids in the mix and its like a cut which will never heal. Im sorry but I still will tell you that I would love to place my own kid at Sunset Palms if I could. The early intervention off Hagen and that school by far have one of the best teachers I came across the entire 8 schools I attended. We should go and fight TALLAHASSEE cuz they are for sure leaving us behind. The No Child left behind is BS because alot of our kids are not taking the FCAT. Thanks to our beautiful laws and the bloody FCAT. Or as my 11 year daughter likes to call it. (neurotypical) The Florida Child Abuse Test. Guest guest
Inclusion does work if done correctly! I have found the same to be true in the school system in Hillsborough County where we moved from. We should be careful to tell other the this model does not work because I've seen it continue to work for all most 6 years at my school in Tampa.I started my own school with inclusion classrooms because my child wasn't getting what she needed. We have helped hundreds of children on the spectrum and regular education. If done correctly with a good Behavior Program as a core part of this environment its wonderful for all children involved. If you can't find what you want in the system try looking for a McKay private school or charter school as well. I just created my own because I was desperate to give my child what they needed and deserve. Guest guest
I too worked as a classroom teacher for many years before quitting because of the disgusting mess that is what we lovingly call public education (not that private schools are any better). I ran an ESOL program and I will tell you that the schools are leaving lots of kids behind. I believe whole heartedly that students on either side of the normal line are at a huge disadvantage in the classroom and are in need of more 1 to 1 or at least no more than 1 to 4 teacher student ratios. This is a plan that is not sustainable because it is much too pricey for the general population to swallow (God forbid you have to raise property taxes by 50 cents per every 100 thousand dollars worth of assessed value to actually be able to fund our schools properly!) Until our schools go to year round where there are no gaps in education, the classroom sizes are dramatically dropped, and teachers, staff, and administration are educated and trained to work with special needs students, then our education system will never be adequate for students who are at the top and the bottom of the performers list. All this being said, that does not mean we just chuck the whole system and start over. Inclusion is not some unreachable utopia, it works in some places (albeit not many), but it is attainable. My child learns more in a three hour ABA session than he does all week at school, but he needs the socialization, and he needs to be able to function in an environment other than a small controlled room where there are lots of safety nets. He needs to be in school just like typical kids need to be in school, but his teachers need to be trained, educated, and prepared to work with him and the many others just like him in classrooms all over the world. A bachelors degree and an ESE certificate does not equate to highly qualified, nor does that limited amount of education prepare you for an inclusion classroom.
