Guest guest
I asked Fred's gastro if her treatment plan for his pancreatitis was " cutting edge, " as I'd never read any research about treating patients with 8 -10 cans of Peptinex (what they tube- feed people with) every day for a week or two. She said " nope, not cutting edge, " and reiterated hospital policy of NOT admitting patients with pancreatitis - I assume due to high rate of alcoholics who have the disease, taxing the system. I overnighted the vanilla flavor from WalMart online. Dr. said it would cost $1,000 a week, and insurance would probably not pay for it. With the $80 shipping fee it came to $240 for three days supply. So it would actually work out to about $349 for a week's supply. She also said the fact that he developed pancreatitis was highly unusual. Fred and I both chimed in that lots of people with PSC get pancreatitis. That was news to her. So looks like we'll be going to the Mayo Clinic in ville if he needs an ERCP. Fred and I both researched Atlanta drs, and neither he nor I feel comfortable with anyone in this area dealing with this! Was wondering if anyone has ever heard of actually drinking Peptonix as treatment? Dr. said it bypasses the small intestine (?) and is easy on the pancreas. Guest guest
Dear ; I have absolutely no experience on what nutrition is appropriate for acute pancreatitis of different severity, but here's a couple of papers that I think would be very relevant: Krenitsky J, Makola D, Parrish CR (2007) Parenteral Nutrition in Pancreatitis is Passé: But Are We Ready for Gastric Feeding? A Critical Evaluation of the Literature - Part I. NUTRITION ISSUES IN GASTROENTEROLOGY, SERIES #54, PRACTICAL GASTROENTEROLOGY, SEPTEMBER 2007, p 92-112. Krenitsky J, Makola D, Parrish CR (2007) Parenteral Nutrition in Pancreatitis is Passé: But Are We Ready for Gastric Feeding? A Practical Guide to Jejunal Feeding: Revenge of the Cyst - Part II. NUTRITION ISSUES IN GASTROENTEROLOGY, SERIES #55, PRACTICAL GASTROENTEROLOGY, OCTOBER 2007, p. 54-72. I will post these in the files folder shortly, and they'll be called " KrenitskyJ2007a.pdf " and " KrenitskyJ2007b.pdf " , respectively. Best regards, Dave (father of (23); PSC 07/03; UC 08/03)
