Parents: when starting any new therapy or program, if you are not seeing changes

within 3-6 weeks, you must re-evaluate the situation. Many parents keep their

children in therapies hoping that changes and progression will come sooner or

later. That may not always be true. The program must have enough intensity,

duration and frequency to elicit quick, permanent changes. Caveat Emptor-Let the

buyer beware.

Coming from a therapist's perspective. Some changes are gradual and may take longer than 3-6 weeks, especially if the therapist has to get any behavioral issues under management so that therapy can be a benefit. There are also times of seemingly no progression and then huge leaps. As with the diagnosis, every child is different and so is every therapist. Some bond, some don't. However, a 3-6 week period barely scratches the surface. Parents and therapists are a strong connection to having success with therapy. Ask the therapist questions, be involved with the therapy goals at home also, ask to be in the therapy session. If you don't feel that you believe or trust the therapist then by all means find someone else. Our children need consistency and trust also in their

therapist & therapy sessions. Bouncing from therapist to therapist every couple of months is tough on the child also. To: sList Sent: Thursday, September 1, 2011 11:16 AMSubject: One Caveat
