Guest guest
Janet I am so happy you wrote this post. I should have thought about spreading the word sooner. my sixteen year old (autistic son) has been in Peer Link for the past four months. It was highly recommended by our family therapist. I initially was skeptical about the program but have been converted by the excellent improvements that I have witnessed in my son. He is more out going. Has been better in communication and he asks to go to the events that he likes (this was totally new). Thanks for spreading the word. Summer Camp Hello Listmates, During the summer and for school holidays and the winter recess, my son LOVES LOVES going to Peer Link in South Dade. STS picks him up and drops him off. My son Logan is 20 now (autistic, speech and language delay), but has been going since he was 16. It is a full service Community Integration Program that offers a whole range of services to developmentally disabled teens and adults. They accept medwaiver - and they really worked with us to help us get Logan there, so whatever you have in government assistance, I hope they can help you too. Lots of actrivities like swimming, bowling, outings to malls, Dave & Buster's, alligator farm, etc. Honestly, Logan gets around more than we do. These people have been beyond wonderful to my boy, and I think they are the greatest group I've been privileged to find. I am just a mom, not a paid spokesperson or anything like that. I hope if someone needs something like this for their older kids here in Miami-Dade County, this will be useful. Here is their website: http://www.peerlinkprograms.com/ Regards, Janet Miami Mom of Logan (20) Katy (9) and Cami (7) - All Autistic P.S. - This isn't just for summer camp, it is available year round and they can even help with respite care. Guest guest
Karate summer camp programs would be good for kids like that. Positive reinforcement is built into the program, along with regular and vigorous exercise/fun activities. Guest guest
, What are you talking about? ESY is extended school year for kids who may regress over the summer and kids have to qualify for those services. Why are you calling it "Summer Camp"? Was there another program offered? Guest guest
My son is going to a social skills " camp " in Weston at Child Provider Specialists (he's 4). They also have another " camp " for the older kids and for those who only have Adhd or other learning disabilities. They have a great facility with a zoo room with animals and they have a Karate group that works specifically with these kids on positive reinforcement and building self esteem. These guys are great and my kids has come really far in their camp. I like their attitude and approach and the whole atmosphere is very nurturing and positive. I know the also go bowling once a week and the older kids love it. Shiri > > > > > > > The YMCA in Hollywood offers a great gymnastics program. Guest guest
The problem is that ESY doesn't come close to being an extension of the regular school year. The schools do such a terrible job in the area of speech delay. Most parents go to the private sector for additional instruction. That in itself should tell you something. Here is an example of extending Speech Class: All 6 children in the class cluster have Speech at the same time for 30 minutes. That leaves 5 minutes per child. Now add travel time and time needed to settle the class down. Now find for me peer reviewed material that states 3 minutes per day is enough time per day for a child that has speech apraxia. Guest guest
That's right there is no other program offered. When have ever had options in the school? Every year the ESY teacher the school changes. My son goes for 4 weeks out of the year. 4 hours a day 4 days a week. I am sorry that is going to do nothing for my child with autism. Good thing for my private therapy. Wait a minute, that is were my son learns all of "educational" skills during the school year. I know of many parents that opt out of ESY stating that is does more harm than help. Yes, it is free, I am not sure it's quality. Just because a services is free does not justify it to be a "quality service". Schools are required by federal law to provide this to children with disability's they feel are going to regress. Guest guest
I think you don't understand what ESY is. My daughter is participating for the full 6 weeks at Baudhuin. If there's an ESY camp, I, too, haven't heard of one. There aren't lots of " camps " for autistic children under 5. And where there are, they are for maybe 3 hours a day, 4 days a week (sometimes for the full week). Again, if you know something I don't, please share for next year. > > > > The YMCA in Hollywood offers a great gymnastics program. Guest guest
My daughter has been going to JCC in Davie...I was very hesitating in not sending to ESY...but in HER case... it was the best thing I could have done...she has progressed SO MUCH...and most important...she is SAFE...the director of the program is AWESOME....the only thing you have to register VERY early...as the availability goes very fast ( like dec-Jan...) Good luck, Nathalie
Guest guest
The District may design ESY so poorly just so most parents will opt out even if their kids " qualify. Guest guest
ESY is not full-time either, it's from 8 to 12, 4 days a week. If your child goes for 6 weeks and the break is what, 11 weeks long? What about the rest of the time? Aren't there any chances of a child regressing in that time? that plus the teachers are not always the same (most schools in Weston don't offer ESY for elementary kids), different environment...by the time the kids get acquainted, it's over. I get it that there are budget cuts and all but truth is that it's a faulty program. > > > > > > > > The YMCA in Hollywood offers a great gymnastics program. Guest guest
There are several summer camps for children with special needs, including Autism, that receive funding from the Children's Services Council to provide full day programming. These camps must provide academics (reading, math, science), social skills training, a fitness program, cultural arts and recreation, nutrition, a service learning experience, etc. and parents fees are based on a sliding scale. ARC Broward's KAMP Krayola is among them...you can get info about all of these programs during the year (for next summer) at www.cscbroward.org or 211. Enrollment fills up very quickly (usually around Feb or March each year) in all of these programs. Guest guest
Hello , IDEA says our kids are entitled to a free and appropriate education, there is no mention of except when there are budget cuts. The Florida State Constitution says all students are entitlrd to a secure and high quality education, there is no mention of except when there are budget cuts. Please do not ever let anyone from the district ever tell you they can't provide something your child is entitled to because of funding. It's not true and it's against the law. If your child is entitled to it, they have to provide it. Steve Moyer " Wihlborg " wrote: I know that the budget cuts are affecting us all---regular kids as well as our kids.
