Recruiting Participants for an NIH/NIMH Study on

Recovery in Autism

The Autism Research Institute (ARI) is assisting

Black, Ph.D. of NIMH recruit participants for a research study on

recovery in autism. Dr. Steve Edelson met with Dr. Black during this

year?s IMFAR conference in Philadelphia, and they spent time discussing

some of the details of the project.

Dr. Black is interested in recruiting older children and adolescents

who had received a diagnosis of autism, but who no longer meet the

criteria for autism. The requirements are as follows:

Diagnosed with autistic disorder before the

age of six years.

Do not currently meet the criteria for

autistic disorder, and have significantly improved since their initial

diagnosis. These individuals may still have PDD, ADHD, etc. as long as

they are clearly much better and are essentially able to function in a

classroom setting with minimal or no support.

Currently between the ages of 8 and 17,

although children as young as 7 years may be considered.

Travel costs to Bethesda, land; accommodations; and compensation

for time is provided by NIH.

If you are interested in participating in this study and/or would like

to learn more about the study, please contact Dr. Black at

AutismOutcomeStudy@... or call .

SPOTLIGHT ON STAFF

Jane attended her first

Defeat Autism Now! Conference in 2001 as a mother and liked it so much

that she went back every year thereafter. When Dr. Edelson said he

could use a little help in the fall of 2007, she was thrilled by the

opportunity to volunteer. Jane feels deeply indebted to ARI, and now

that her three children are college aged, she has extra time on her

hands. Jane moderates the four ARI support listservs, helps organize

the think tanks and conferences, and helps edit the ARI e-newsletter

and the conference manuals. She has edited three books with her mother:

Dr. Jepson’s Changing the Course of Autism, Siblings: The

Autism Spectrum Through Our Eyes, and Families of Adults with Autism:

Stories and Advice for the Next Generation. Jane lives New York

City and went to Columbia University.
