venting about colonoscopy

Hello Everyone,

I am very angry that I went through my colonoscopy awake. I was suppose

to have general anesthetic and someone dropped the ball in relaying that

information with the department that gives anesthetic. They did my test

with conscience sedation which never works for me. I was awake and in a

lot of pain. Also I have a paper that says any procedure or surgery I

should be given antibiotics before the procedure or surgery to protect

my heart from infection and they didn't do it. I wasn't treated right by

the doctor/hospital that did my test and I'm not sure what I can do

about it. I'm still angry about the whole situation! I feel like I was

not respected by my doctor whom I thought was doing the test, but only

over saw it. A resident was doing the test. That's the thing I hate

about teaching hospitals is it seems everyone but your doctor treats

you. Though it might be a good thing as much of a jerk my doctor

was yesterday. I've been with this doctor for over 10 years he normally

treats me better than he did yesterday.

Has anyone else been awake through a colonoscopy?

Hi,Since I was diagnosed with UC in 1970, I've had easily 30 colonoscopies (don't know the actual count). I was awake for all but one of them - and yes it really hurt and really sucked. I'm awake for conscious sedation as well. When I had my endoscopy recently I told the doctor the problem and asked for extra versced (sp), so instead of 2 mg, I got 4 mg, and I was out for the entire procedure. I'm having an endoscopy ultrasound in 2 weeks and hope I can get extra versced then as well. As bad as a colonoscopy is when you're awake, and endoscopy is a lot worse. And the colonoscopy is extremely painful - I would often scream from pain. I thought I was supposed to be awake so they didn't puncture the colon. Turns out that doctor didn't seem to know I was in a lot of pain (yes - he was an idiot in a lot of ways). When I switched doctors, I discussed this with her and she put me out completely. Now I have a j-pouch, so the scope is pretty simple - but it's still uncomfortable. I take a valium before the procedure and that gets me through it.The good thing with being awake during a colonoscopy is that you can see what's going on with your colon. If it looks really bad, it's easier to accept that the colon needs to come out if you've seen for yourself how bad it looks. Although having the colon removed isn't an easy decision by any means.Marie

, all I can say is Ouch! was never awake for a

colonoscopy. You should complain, and complain some more. Especially

about the antibiotic mishap. Good grief!

,

I have had several colonoscopy's in the last 6 years I have been

awake for at least 2 of them, Ouch you are right, when they fill your

colon with air, it really hurts. However, I must confess that the

last one that I was awake for was per my request. I had 2 doctors

trying to convince me for a year to remove my colon (they initially

thought I had UC but turns out it's crohns), anyway I had to see for

myself what shape my colon was in, sure enough after seeing it (in

high definition no less, ewwww) I agreed to 2/3 removal, but I really

did have to stay awake and see it for myself.

I've been fully awake for every colonoscopy I've had (#20 in July). I've never had much discomfort, just a little cramping going " around the corners " .

They actually can put these on video (at least most systems I've seen

can) and let you watch them afterward if you can convince them to do

it. That way you can concentrate on what your colon looks like rather

than what you're experiencing! I've still got the video of my

gallbladder surgery!

I saw this and just had to respond. My husband has an allergic

reaction to some pain meds (he can’t urinate afterwards). He has

never been awake/conscious for a Colonoscopy, however this past time the doctor

said he had a really hard time getting him to the point of

comfort/sedation. They used morphine. Apparently, quite a bit too-

in comparison to the doc’s normal patients. But my husband is

anything but normal. He has migraines on top of PSC and indeterminate

colitis. 2 days before the most recent colonoscopy he had experienced a

migraine and had taken percocet (as prescribed) I guess it was still in his

system and made him desensitized to the morphine. His doctor is great

though- he does anything in his power to make hubby comfortable. He would

never make him go through it in pain. I guess having a doctor who has

Colitis has it’s perks! I wouldn’t settle for a grumpy doctor

that doesn’t treat you well. Find someone that cares and will

listen to you. We drive more than 60 miles each way to see this doctor

and we are both very happy with him. I think it is worth it!

Good luck.
