Actually, Betsy Farmer in Brevard Cnty. is working on a project. Unfortunately

in FL there are a lot of people and organizations like FDDC who are working hard

to prevent places like this from being built in this state.

Seriously, parents banding against the FDDC isn't going to bring an autism

community to Florida. What will bring an autism and developmental disabilities

community to Florida is A LOT of families who come to the realization that they

need this. It takes time, money and commitment from a lot of people. There is no

doubt that in the years to come, this will happen. Why? Because we have no

choice. I am sure that eventually there will be several communities in Florida.

As I have mentioned before, the reason this hasn't happened as of yet is because

there are not enough families in our state with adult or almost adult children

who have gotten together to commit to seriously doing this. There have been

small splinter groups which will grow in the years to come and this will happen.

Right now, the bulk of the families have younger children and are youngish

themselves. They have enough issues to deal with rather than focusing on the

time when they will be too old or not around to take care of an adult with

autism. It's just not in a young person's mindset to worry about old age or

death. I think there is a change in perspective when a person reaches older

middle age (around 50 and up) and has a child who is an adult with disabilities.

You may start having some health issues yourself, or you realize that your adult

child is getting harder for you to manage on your own. I think at that point,

the reality that you have to figure out the future sets in. Then I think it's

natural to go through the stages of grief all over again: denial (the government

will take care of my child when I'm gone), anger (no one is going to take care

of my child when I'm gone), bargaining (maybe a relative will take care of my

child when I'm gone), depression (Oh my God, I'm so worried about who's going to

take care of my child when I'm gone), and acceptance (I will figure out a way to

make sure my child is well taken care of when I am gone).

I spend hours researching the other communities in the country. One thing that

has interested me is the fact that some of them started as day programs which

cultivated several industries that eventually lead to one means of bringing

income into the community. This concept has really sparked my interest. I feel

that it may be doable to develop day programs that are actually cottage

industries that will serve the purpose of training individuals to have

productive lives, create income for the community, and bring families together

so that they can focus on the eventual residential plan. I know that Dr Clayman

is involved in researching the farming options. I am involved in other cottage

industry options that deal with culinary products and services.

Truly, I am very optimistic about the future of developmental disability

communities in this state. There has been a great deal more interest over the

past 5 years. All the answers are not there yet. We have to be patient as well

as pro-active, no doubt. It's not human nature to be patient and pro-active at

the same time. But that is what is required.

So I guess my point is, let's not spend time and energy trying to band against

any organization that thinks they can tell families what they can and can't do

in regards to their own children. Instead, put your creativity and energy into

researching the other communities in the country to gain knowledge about how we

can do this successfully in Florida and perhaps join the established groups that

have already started to get the ball rolling (AFFDDA through Dr. Clayman and

myself, Independence Heights with Kathy Buerosse, Betsy Farmer's group, etc)

Just keep in your mind, THIS WILL HAPPEN. It will don't worry.

This is a video with kids in south africa. Yes Autism is everywhere. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3169DOJSZvsThis is not just happening to just you and your family or just here in the USA. We need to stop just thinking about ourselves as how Autism effects us, our families, our community but How this effects our world. So the more we address the problem correctly before it is severe then we can make a difference. Now is the time to develop ideas for communities and not wait till everyone is an adult. Lia,

I only know of one APD funded home in FL. Tacachale in Gainseville. It is state

run. I visited once (about 3 years ago), and found it somewhat depressing and

not in good shape. I have also heard that the care is somewhat lacking due to

low pay of employees. You could find out about it on their web site.

http://apd.myflorida.com/ddc/tacachale/

also there is a story from a resident:

http://apd.myflorida.com/ddc/tacachale/docs/marks-life-at-tacachale.pdf

The place in Brevard that Betsy is planning is open to anyone. I believe there

will be rental and purchase opportunities. I spoke to a friend and she

mentioned Bishop Grady Villas in St. Cloud and Noah's Ark in Lakeland. She

believes these are private pay and that APD will not pay for services at them.

If your child would need any additional services such as a job shadow, someone

to guide him through getting his meals doing laundry, etc. it could be very,

very

expensive. Betsy is working on a plan that hopefully will be funded by

donations and a little money from private pay. She was trying to get some

services funded by APD, and has already gotten some money through donations.

I've put the web info for the 2 places my friend mentioned below.

Jack Cosack of Noah's Ark had quite a fight to get permits etc. to build his

place. He actually started the project in late 1996 and the firstresidents moved

in late in 2003. The problem with all of these is funding. APD doesn't want to

fund any part of it even for people already getting APD services.

Some people who get full funding for their child and don't spend a lot of

personal time with their kids don't see a need for communities/ homes and fight

against them. Saying they will " stifle " their child's ability to be as near to

normal as possible. They

think their children can function among the general population because the full

time aide helps them and because the aide says they do well. They don't actually

know as they don't spend as much time with their kids as people who don't have

an aide. They also believe that there will be the type of abuses that occurred

in the assylums of old. I think we have better oversight now and parents are

more likely to speak up if they see abuse.
