My father was diagnosed with SC . After his operation in 2004 where in his liver was directly joined with intestine , he developed stricture. In Aug 2006 the balloon dilatation was done and 3 plastic stent were placed . Doctor advice them to be there for 1 yr so that a permanent path for bile flow will develop. For whole yr his jaundice was controlled . it remain fluctuating under 3-4 and many time it was as low as 0.4 . This year the plastic stunt were removed and again his biliarirubin level stated increasing . We are now advised to put a metallic stunt to restore flow of bile .... can some body help me and share the experince . We are in dileamma because doctors said that they can not be removed once placed and they will block in 6 month. Also if u could suggest some thing for itching & sleeping disorder. Thanks in advace . I have had 18 ERCP*S with the plastic stent for the past 10 years and I go every 6 months to have to exchanged.

My son got a metal stent this past summer for a stricture in his bile ducts, but the dr. did not tell us it would get blocked. They told us the plastic one could only be left in for a couple months at the most. So far it has kept his numbers down in the perfect range and he has not had any problems. Before Tyler's transplant he suffered with intense itching and no sleep and he tried so many things but nothing seemed to help him. After his tx he has not had any problems at all. Good luck, I hope you find some answers.

There is a new type of metal stent intended for more long term use

that is not supposed to be used only for terminal patients to relieve

symptoms like the original metal stents were designed for. I believe

it has been available for a little while now but still pretty new. It

is like a metal mesh that is supposed to work well for long term use

but is not used just to relieve symptoms in a ptient expected to die-

it is for patients like your dad who need a longer term solution. My

son's doctor was waiting for it to be available in a pediatric size

for him to get one. The plastic stents if working seem to make more

sense for your father if I am understanding his condition correctly.

My son's plastic stents had to be replaced very frequently (every 4-6

weeks for a year) because they kept getting clogged with sluge and

stones and didn't last anywhere near a year. Has that option been

explored- to keep replacing the plastic stents ?

How about an external drain- has that been discussed ? If they say the

metal stent with be occluded in 6 months and can't be removed what is

the plan after 6 months ?

They have used plastic catheter not stent for external drainage. This needs to be replaced after every 4 weeks .. so in last year it was replaced 10-11 times . Doctors were telling that that if we keep on doing this for a yr a permanent path will develop . But after removing these catheter teh jaundice start increasing . Now they are advising metallic stent , they have no answer for the question that what will be done when the metalic will get block . We have decided to keep the plastic catheter only. wildwildtrips wrote: There is a new type of metal stent intended for more long term usethat is not supposed to be used only for terminal patients to relievesymptoms like the original metal stents were designed for.
