Guest guest
My son was Hyperlexic as a child. He taught himself to read at 3 1/2, he learned the alphabet by watching Sesame Street and Barney. By the time he was 6 he could sound out just about every word put in front of him (sometimes with help). Around this age he could read "War and Peace" but he had no idea what he was reading. To this day his word recognition level is very high but his reading comprehension is not. During his elementary years, he suffered from a seizure disorder which he outgrew but while he was on seizure meds his brain chemistry changed. He used to also have a photographic memory but after the seizure meds, that is gone. Now, at the age of 15, he hates to read. Go figure. Robin My 5 year old son was diagnosed 2 years ago (HFA). He has always loved letters and words but lately he is obssesivly reading everything he see's . Brand names, signs, etc etc.... He has the capability to read books that are way above his age group , but prefers to read very strange things like nutrition labels , instructions etc... This is causing him to isolate himself and I am starting to worry . Does anyone have any information on hyperlexia and how it is related to Autism? Does anyone have experience with a child with hyperlexia ? Thanks for your help

Guest guest
The reading above the child's level is a typical trait in hyperlexia. A good web site to check out is: http://www.hyperlexia.net/hyperlexia-facts.html Have you considered trying to ween your child from nutrition labels by letting him read short medical pamphlets like you find in the doctor's office or at the pharmacy. I know it seems strange, but because of your child's advanced word recognition skills, he may take pleasure in reading hard to pronounce or more complicated words which he finds in nutrition lists. You could try getting your son to read some first or second grade (or maybe higher level) science and health books to satisfy this need. I don't know a lot about hyperlexia, but I once had a neighbor whose child was diagnosed with it, and I learned most of what I do know, from her. Guest guest
Hi, my son is 4 1/2 hfa. He is a letters and numbers kid and has also been reading words for a while. I was afraid he would start reading words without the comprehension so I made sure he started a reading program at school very early on. At first they didn't want to because he was still in pre- k but they listened and it has been great. Because of his love for letters - they have always been calming for him. Sometime reading signs outside can help him adapt to a new environment. Does you son understand what he is reading? I also bought mine some of the early reader books with very simple language so we can talk about what he reads while looking at the pictures. I know all of our kids are different but wanted to share. Hope it helps. Sent from my iPhone My 5 year old son was diagnosed 2 years ago (HFA). He has always loved letters and words but lately he is obssesivly reading everything he see's . Guest guest
Hello, My son is five years old and also has traits of hyperlexia but has not been diagnosed. He is on the spectrum. He was diagnosed with PDD-NOS and has said the alphabet in English, French, and Spanish since he was three years old. He also sosounds out any word and loves to read signs. He perseverates on the alphabet and is very similar with numbers too. He can also spell things by memory if he has seen the word just a few times. He spells elephant, quail, library because he remembers them from his toys. His comprehension is budding because we are showing him pictures of everything he spells out. I don't know enough about this to explain how it is linked to Autism but I am very curious as well. I would love to meet you and your son to see if we see any similarities and might be able to help out each other. Let me know. > > My 5 year old son was diagnosed 2 years ago (HFA).
