Guest guest
Hi, I am thinking of setting up an appointment with Dr. Metzger; however, I have heard she is hostile to the low oxalate diet, which is the only thing that has ever brought me relief. I also read somewhere she is very quick to prescribe a lot of things without proper testing, and too much into the food allergy thing. Can anyone tell me about their experiences w/ her? Guest guest
Can you explain please about Dr. Metzger not testing properly and prescribing what things? I thought she was into some foods causing autoimmune reactions and didn't know she was involved in allergy?? Not the same thing at all. When one is on a low oxalate diet, one shouldn't be eating grains (like gluten products). I am wondering what tests are performed by gyns who are prescribing all kinds of things without really knowing what is going on. Guest guest
Hi Arlene, I can only speak for myself, but in my experience with Dr. Metzger, every test she's requested has yielded important, treatable results that have lessened my pain. I think part of my ease with her approach has come from the fact that I've known myself to have extensive allergies/sensitivities to foods and environmental allergens since early childhood. The difference between her approach and the allergists I've seen, is that she grants that the load on the immune system caused by these agents can result in systemic inflammation, including inflammation of the vulva. Every patient is different, but for me, it has been critical to identify the foods, dust, and molds that aggravate my pain and address them both via desensitization (allergy drops), reduced exposure, and, in the case of molds, antifungals. She also is the first doctor to correctly diagnose my endometriosis, gluten intolerance, and lyme disease, all of which are related to mistaken immune response and can cause various types of pelvic pain. As I've said before, if you don't suspect that systemic immune dysfunction is underlying your pain, then an approach like Dr. Metzger's will feel overwrought (and needlessly expensive). In my case, however, it is the only protocol--out of dozens I've tried--that has helped me. Best, Glomer > > Can you explain please about Dr. Metzger not testing properly and prescribing what things? Guest guest
Is her theory that vulvodynia is linked to an overactive, " autoimmune " immune system? I never get sick and have a few food allergies. My vulvodynia started after taking an antibiotic that wipes out oxalobacter formigenes, and i know if i eat the tiniest amount of oxalate i have a huge flare up. > > > > who and where is Dr Metger? > > > > C > > **************Make your life easier with all your friends, email, and > > favorite sites in one place. Guest guest
In short, yes, though the disruption to the gut flora you describe as a result of the antibiotics is part of the autoimmune picture. If you are having good results attending to oxalates, then you might want to stick to that approach and perhaps add physical therapy and/or E&T cream. Good luck! Guest guest
I went to her and she was somewhat helpful. I ended up doing allergy shots with a local allergist, as allergy drops are not covered by my insurance. She was the ONLY doc who was happy to rx pain meds which were much needed at one time. She was kind and thorough. Lindsey

Guest guest
I saw Dr. Metzger for 2 years. She tested for everything in trying to treat me, even some things that are definitely out there. Although she couldn't really help me in the end (no one has), I felt she was very thorough and well meaning. She is very big on doing food and environmental allergy testing and works with an allergist in her office. Regarding the low oxalate diet, she thinks it too difficult and hasn't seen much improvement with it. She's not against it. She welcomes any information that her patients bring her. The down side is that she is very expensive and much of the testing and allergy treatments are not covered by insurance. A consultation with her may cost a lot, but it won't hurt you. Guest guest
The other thing about her is that if you have a pretty firm belief about hwat is causing it, she would probably support it. Lindsey
