Hi,

If I enroll my child in a private school this year, I know that the private school will get funded based on whatever her matrix number currently is. My question is, does that matrix number ever change within the private school system? I know that if I keep her in a public school and that if there's a reduction or increase of services that number could change, but what happens to that number in a private school setting? Does it ever change? Do I run the risk that the following school year the matrix number can change and hence the amount to pay the tuition out of my pocket could significantly increase as well?

Once in a private school the matrix number should not change. Every 3 years you

will get a request for a re evaluation from the district. Thai is not required

and we always declined.

We kept our son in McKay for over 6 years with no changes in matrix, however

because the Legislature kept cutting the ED budget the amount did get smaller

over the years.

I have never heard of it changing outside the public schools. I hate to say that's a guaranteed answer, but all the looking into it I've done, its like everything freezes when you leave public school, the IEP, the matrix number etc. You can easily call the mckay school choice hotline and ask though, but I really don’t think so.

Once you leave the public school system and enroll in a private mckay school your matrix number does not change. It will stay the same the entire time you are continuously enrolled in a participating McKay private school. If you withdraw from the private school and enter back into any non partipating mckay school or any public school you lose the scholarship and you must start the whole IEP/matrix process over again.

The matrix number will not change once you leave public school. If a childs needs increase the matrix # unfortunately does not go up to support the needed help. One word of warning is if things do not work at the private school, have another one ready to try. Once you are out of a private school for I believe 30 days you lose your mckay and must return to public school. Once back in public school you must be there for the Oct and Feb count in the same school year to qualify for McKay again.

Another aspect parents should be aware of is that many private schools will very willingly take our kids, until they get paid the matrix monies, then can kick our kid out saying they cannot service them in their setting. The kid returns to public school and the private schools keep the money; they do not return it to the public school system. It's another reason our public school system is so broke.

Hello ,

I believe HB1505 which passed last session and went into effect July 1 makes it

easier to get a McKay Scholarship and then keep it without having to requalify.

V Pre-K kids with IEP's now qualify.

It is also easier to keep the Scholarship without having to re qualify in public

schools for a year.

http://www.myfloridahouse.gov/Sections/Documents/loaddoc.aspx?FileName=424452.DO\

CX & DocumentType=Amendments & BillNumber=1505 & Session=2010

Representative sponsored the Bill and is a great champion for our kids.

She is running for a State Senate seat in the district that runs from SW 8th St

to Kendall and then almost to Homestead West of about Red Road.

Next year we going to try and reduce or eliminate the one year requirement.

Hi, Tina. It seems to me that the public school system is saving

a lot of money by having parents use McKayt. At times it seems like they

promote it just to get us out of their hair and to save money. I think it would

be interesting to know exactly how many families use the scholarship to avoid

sending their child to a public school. Remember they are also choosing a

private school over other public schools. In any case it doesn't send any kudos

to the public schools. If they keep doing such a poor job of educating our

children maybe all of them will end up in private schools.

How are the public school saving money with the Mckay? The Mckay takes the funds that were given to the school on the child's behalf and gives it to the private school. The public school has been getting these funds for our kids but in reality they may not go directly for the child. Those funds go to a general account at the school to be used at the principal's discretion. The principal could probably buy new carpet for his office with those extra funds. Sent from my iPad

The private school my son has at did just this. There is a specific date the kids have to be there for them to get funding for the quarter which is before the quarter actually starts. They kept my son through the day he needed to be there to get 2nd quarter funding and then said the school was not appropriate to him. My son had not changed. So they got paid for 2 quarters of school and did not even keep him a whole quarter. Left us with no where to turn except for hospital homebound.

Thank you all for your help with this. The comment below is certainly good to know. One more question, what if it's the other way around? What if I was not happy with the private school and wanted to pull my child out before I signed off the 2nd quarter check? Can I do that? Or am I obligated to give the private school the Mckay check even if I pulled out my child and enrolled her back in public school?Sent from my iPad

the answer is..if your student is enrolled for 10 days within that payment period then technically the the private school has the right to keep the check....some schools are strict with this and others give it to the school that had the student a majority of the days in that payment period..while others share the check.

I removed my son from public school & put him in private. He was there a full year when I learned about the matrix score. I researched & found out my son's matrix score was to low. I called the ESE director for the school district & he agreed it was to low & changed it to the proper score immediately. Everyone should check the childs matric score before leaving to make sure it is the correct score. I have found they give out the lowest number unless you speak up.

How do you go about finding the matrix number, will my daughter's school provide that? I've moved to Florida a year ago and my daughter was put striaght into public school, she's in 10th grade now. In New York she was going to a private school, I would like to know how would I go about finding out if this school is right for her?

My daughter is diagnosed with Autisim/ Asperger. She is currently attending Whispering Pines in Miramar.

If someone coud please get back to me, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you.

If your child attends a Broward County public school, you can view it on their website, along with his/her IEP.

In Dade, it appears to be under lock and key, depending upon what school your child attends.

On what website can you view your child's matrix score and IEP? You mentioned

in Broward, a parent can do this, but you didn't mention the website. Would you

share that info please? I know my daughter's #, but I'd like to research it, as

M. suggested. Thank you!
