New Autism Initiative Delivers College Academic and Social Support

SALT LAKE CITY, UT (July 29, 2010) – The US Autism & Asperger Association (USAAA) today announced the launch of the USAAA "College Autism Project" or CAP program, a new initiative that will bring academic and social support for individuals with autism on college and university campuses. The CAP program was made possible through a generous donation from the K. and E. Shockey Family Fund, a fund of the Pennsylvania Automobile Association (PAA) Foundation.

Through the CAP program, USAAA will align with universities and colleges to provide training and support for faculty to help best meet the needs of their students affected by autism and Asperger's Syndrome. USAAA will also launch a safe social networking environment to allow students to communicate with fellow students facing the same challenges at many different post-secondary schools.

"There are some colleges that provide programs and support for individuals with Asperger's Syndrome and High Functioning Autism", explained Lawrence P. Kaplan, PhD, USAAA CEO. "The challenge today is that more and more students with Asperger's Syndrome and High Functioning Autism are entering college without the support they need to succeed. USAAA will provide the training to college faculty to meet the needs of their students both academically and socially.

"Many barriers prevent these students with the opportunity they require to accomplish something special," said Dr. Kaplan. "Our goal is to provide the opportunity for the students to achieve their fullest potential."
