Sharon I re-registered at the " do not call " list registry (national one) and this time it seems to have taken. I still get a fair number of calls. It's funny, but when my credit card gets over a certain balance, I start getting marketing calls from refinance and debt consolidation companies. Now that my balance is down, I'm not getting those so much. I've been driven nuts by the car warranty places demanding that I renew my warranty (which I never had in the first place). They keep telling me that it's absolutely my *last* chance, and several times I've pushed the button to talk to the person and *begged* them to please let it be the last chance so I don't get these stupid calls! A week or so ago it was the political polls and surveys. Plus I got a " personal " recorded message from Hillary Clinton, and *two* from McCain! ;D ;D I went out and looked at Barak Obama's web site, and you had to give your e-mail address to look at it. I got SPAMMED. I unsubscribed, and wrote them a nasty message that I shouldn't have to sign up for a mailing list just to see where the guy stands on the issues. :-/ I understand that some of these disabled vets things are scams. If you want to contribute, I'm sure the armed forces and pentagon sites can direct you to reputable charities. I'm a little more polite to the charities, but I simply tell them, " I'm sorry, I can't " , and hang up. I pick up my phone a little more since the " do not call " thing took effect. But often, I just let the answering machine pick up. That cuts out a lot of the calls right there. But the rule of thumb is, never give your credit card or other information out to someone who has called you. Only when you've called them. BTW, a few years back I was getting several credit card solicitations *per day* by mail. It drove me nuts, as my mailbox is outside and every one of those is a potential identity theft device. I read the fine print on one, and there's a national " opt out " phone number or address - can't remember which - on the back that you can write to or call, to have your name taken off the lists. The flood diminished to a trickle. I occasionally get a thing from AARP or my bank, but that's it. Z
