Guest guest
I know that most of us with FIBROMYALGIA also encounter the terrible IBS monster. Well,I have to say that I have tried just about everything under the sun to keep in under control. Two months ago, I started the ACTIVIA Challenge by Dannon and it is really helping! I also started taking Danactive in the afternoon. I'm not much for the placebo effect, nor am I one for taking nutritional advice with vitamins and supplements - but for me this seems to be working. Now, it took more than the one week challenge for me... but as I continue, it has really helped stabalize both things that happen with IBS. LET Me know if you have taken the challenge and how it works for you! And, if not, you can't lose by eating yogurt. I'm not pushing a drug or a vitamin supplement nor will I ever... But try it and keep in touch. mncjl
Guest guest
I just eat regular yogurt, it has the same probiotics in it. I found Dannon has " natural " yogurt, no artificial anything, and not high fructose corn syrup in it like some of the others. I like it! I try to get fiber in my diet and take probiotics every day and that definitely has helped me keep my ibs to a minimum. mncjl wrote: > I know that most of us with FIBROMYALGIA also encounter the terrible > IBS monster. > > Well,I have to say that I have tried just about everything under the > sun to keep in under control. > > Two months ago, I started the ACTIVIA Challenge by Dannon and it is > really helping! Guest guest
Well, I found that when I became diabetic and added more fiber to my diet, my IBS fell by the wayside quite a bit. Now in the mornings, I am making a protein shake (banana, sliced up apple, 8 oz of rice dream vanilla flavored milk, 1 tsp of organic flaxseed, 1 tsp of liquid organic flaxseed, 1/2 to a cup of oatmeal and 1 tsp of people bee pollen) and mix it to the consistency of a smoothie. It tastes really great and the regularity has come back and the IBS has faded. Now, I have found that if we eat out, because of all the spices, etc. that restaurants use that it will flare up too, but not for long. Guest guest
Darlene, I am so glad you have found something that works for you. That is great! I have to limit my fiber, particularly raw fruits and vegetables, including salads, because I will have an IBS flare. I have explosive IBS with diarrhea; I have very little constipation, occasionally when I don't eat my stonyfield yogurt every day with all the good bacteria. I do have my 3 dairy a day, but instead of rice milk I have Lactaid milk because of lactose intolerance (those little pills don't work for me.) I also eat some of that activa cheese, but mostly my additional milk product is Lactaid cottage cheese with some of those fruit cup bowls, like pears and peachs. mixed in.. My grandson says it looks gross stirred up together. But I think it tastes great! That keeps my IBS under control for the most part unless I get really stressed or emotional and then anything can happen. I too find if I go out to eat all bets are off. I generally plan to do something before eating a meal rather than after, if we are eating out, because a bathroom break may not be far away. But since I rarely do, I don't have to worry about that much. I'm sure you will notice that all the things I do to keep things under control are easy. I would never be able to make that shake in the morning. My daughter does things like that for her and her kids. Believe it or not, and I know I'm in a minority here, I'm not a fan of smoothies. It sounds like you are doing a great job. Keep it up. Guest guest
Hey Everyone, I too have IBS. I take Levbid (hyoscyamine) to help the movement be more regular. It helps so I don't have spasms or at least not savere. I have the lovely switch hitter. Sometimes it is the big C or the almighty D. Many of my meds are constipating. I have also been blessed with " Black Toast Intoglement " as my granddaughter would say at 5yo. I also am diabetic and have about a million other dx.(Slight exageration!) I am lucky that if I an constipated then I eat the no-no dairy foods. Ice Cream, pizza, Grilled Cheese, Choclate Chip Cookie,Etc. I like those meds. The worse Big D eppisode occured about 10yrs before I was dx. I was walking home with my daughter in the summer. I had on a skort outfit and sandles. A couple of blocks from home I got the " rumblies in my tumblies. " It exploded down my legs. It is what I refer to as the brest fed baby poop. As a mother, they were the worst diapers to change because they were very loose and messy. It hasn't improved any. As if the fibro doesn't limit our quality of life then you throw in the ibs and we become even more housebound. JudyMer PS Make my ice cream to go!!! ---- Marti Boguski wrote: > Darlene, > I am so glad you have found something that works for you. Guest guest
I have trouble digesting something in the yogurt, but something that did work for me, and that I will be buying again when I can afford it, is soy protien and whey protien mixed in a chocolate shake in the morning and afternoon. It was a diet but it was the first time I was regular in years. I thought about trying SILK's yogurt to see if it had the same effect. > > I know that most of us with FIBROMYALGIA also encounter the terrible > > IBS monster. > > > > Well,I have to say that I have tried just about everything under the > > sun to keep in under control. > > > > Two months ago, I started the ACTIVIA Challenge by Dannon and it is > > really helping! Guest guest
, Those are great ideas. I had went out anf bought a supplement called Digestive Advantage for IBS I have been using it for a month and it awesome. For me it started working for me. It seemed to settle my stomach. Someone in the group mentioned it and you can buy it at Walmart its about 7.00. I was really surprised. So whoever it was that mentioned it Thank you! They have different ones for different things. Guest guest
Hi Y'all, It always strikes me as amazing that there are almost as many different cures as there are people with the same illnesses. This IBS string definitely proves the adage that everyone is different and everything works differently for each of us. We all have the same type of illness but it's in different bodies and digestive systems and acts differently in each. It's really interesting. While not all of us have IBS, we do seem to all have some type of digestive problem for which there is no specific cure. I hope that doesn't mean there is a different cure for everyone with Fibromyalgia, when one is discovered.. (Do you think I said the word different enough times?) For these reasons it's good that everyone tells what works for them, because you never know who you might be helping. Thanks, Marti Lori Hammer wrote: , Those are great ideas. Guest guest
Somebody (I lost who) said: >> I thought about trying SILK's yogurt to see if it >> had the same effect. You don't have to eat yogurt. You can take acidopholous or one of the probiotic products out there. I take acidopholous in capsule form, that I get from the health food store. You have to keep it in the fridge. But I still like yogurt. I tend to take the capsules if I'm having especially bad trouble or a yeast infection, or am on antibiotics for some reason. Guest guest
Marti, Because there are so many people who say they have gotten relief of their fibromyalgic pain by going on a low oxalate diet, is there any chance these IBS flares have anything to do with oxalate? Since you are talking about this coming on with raw fruits and vegetables, if those are high oxalate foods then the oxalate they contain may irritate the gut. Oxalate is so irritating to skin, for instance, that people who harvest fruits or veggies high in oxalate get a dermatitis that is caused by the oxalate in the plant, so you can see why it could certainly irritate the lining of the gut. For example: =========== Irritant contact dermatitis caused by needle-like calcium oxalate crystals, raphides, in Agave tequilana among workers in tequila distilleries and agave plantations Authors: Salinas, Lorenza; Ogura, Tetsuya; Soffchi, 1 Source: Contact Dermatitis, Volume 44, Number 2, February 2001 , pp. 94-96(3) Abstract: It was found that needle-like calcium oxalate crystals, raphides, are found abundantly in all tissues of Agave tequilana plants; thus, 1 droplet (0.03 ml) of juice pressed from leaves contains 100-150 crystals, 30-500 m in length, sharpened at both ends. In tequila distilleries, 5/6 of the workers who handle the agave stems have experienced the characteristic irritation. In contrast, only 1/3 of workers in agave plantations who harvest agave plants, complain of the irritation. It is confirmed that all the irritation suffered in both distilleries and plantations takes place at bodily locations where the plants come into contact with the worker's skin in the course of their work. ============== Diarrhea is a pretty usual oxalate symptom. On our oxalate list, we have found that the symptoms are the same that come onto people (regardless of diagnosis) when they eat high oxalate foods and the symptoms they have when their bodies are detoxing from oxalate after the diet has lowered blood levels, because lowering blood levels encourages oxalate to come out of cells. We call this process of oxalate release, " dumping " , and it can be quite dramatic with temporarily worsened symptoms followed when its over by big improvements that remain. If you test for oxalate in urine at these times, it will be high even though the diet may be low. One of the big areas of this " oxalate dumping " is diarrhea and it sounds an awful lot like what you are describing. Unusual things can be true of these stools. Sometimes they contain very obvious black specs, and other times (or sometimes at the same time) they are full of sand. Sometimes the color has gotten light, or it is smellier than usual and sometimes it contains completely undigested food. We are not certain what the sand is because so far, no lab has said they would test this sand for us, but this observation has been made by dozens and dozens of people, so we know it is a very real phenomenon. I don't know if any of you have ever seen sandy stools with the IBS flares. Considering this irritatant, Marti and Darlene, and other listmates with these issues, you might find if you familiarize yourself with which fruits and veggies are high oxalate and which are not, that you might find that you are getting the IBS with only certain ones of them, and maybe it will be the high oxalate foods. You'll never know if you don't know that list! I inivite listmates to familiarize themselves with this list at www.lowoxalate.info/recipes which will take you at the lower side of the page to the link to the food lists that you can peruse while you are online or that you can print. If the oxalate is absorbed into the blood, that's when it might be able turn on oxidative stress in tissues and cause PAIN. The pain is the enemy! Oxalate likes to bind to injured tissues, because it likes a molecule that is usually on the inside of the cell membrane, but may flip to the outside when there has been injury or inflammation. That gives oxalate a way to get inside cells and start turning on inflammatory factors. If you want to learn more about the way oxalate works and causes problems, there is a powerpoint available on the AutismOne site that you can read at your leisure: http://autismone.org/uploads/2007/%20Owens%20AO%202007%20presentation.ppt Even though this was a lecture at an autism conference, most of what it talks about is generally applicable to other conditions where oxalates are involved. In fact, some of the parents of children who have put the whole family on lowered oxalates have seen improvements in chronic conditions in other family members that have been a delight for them to experience. That has included improvements in fibromyalgia. We had heard about this association that has been reported before by other people with FM. By the way, the probiotics in yogurt do help to degrade oxalate in the gut. Unfortunately, they are not as talented in breaking down oxalate as an anaerobic bacteria called oxalobacter formigenes that is easily killed back by antibiotics. Brown rice milk is high oxalate, but dairy is pretty much free of oxalate unless you got milk from a cow with oxalosis! I hope this gives you something that might help! Guest guest
For those who don't like yogurt, you can buy acidophilous as a supplement and get it that way. Just FYI. Jeanne in WI I know that most of us with FIBROMYALGIA also encounter the terrible IBS monster. Well,I have to say that I have tried just about everything under the sun to keep in under control. Guest guest
I liked what you said Marti about how we should all share what is working for each of us, because we don't know who we may be helping. I have IBS also and have really found nothing that works for me as yet. I can't eat yogurt because it has to much potassium and I can't eat anything with more than 400 mg potassium in it. I get heart attack symtoms when I do. It's awful. Anyway, am willing to try some of the other suggestions posted. Will just have to see if something will help. Guest guest
Health food Stores are so expensive, right now the only way we are eating is food stamps. I hate it but I don't believe in pride when it comes to my children. I have given up hope on ever getting the ex husband to pay child support and still waiting for SSD. So until something happens, and I know alot of people are in the same position as me, vitamins, and health food stores are out. I do apreciate your ideas so I hope you don't take this wrong. I just wish I could try them. Thanks, > > > Somebody (I lost who) said: > > >> I thought about trying SILK's yogurt to see if it > >> had the same effect. > > You don't have to eat yogurt. Guest guest
Seems like I saw Crystal Light " on the go " drink mixes with the same thing as the yoghurt except you drink it. Watch out for soy products too as they can cause gas in some people with ibs. ddean228 wrote: , I know the Rice Dream milk is lactose free, if that is causing the IBS?
