Guest guest
....I wish a lot of parents were with me yesterday at the first meeting with the teacher for 2nd grade (Sheridan Elementary School). The new teacher is trying to help me how to level my son from 1 to 2 grade as far as his educational curriculum. Last year the school did not have a teacher for most part of the year, only substitutes and saying that, they did not follow my son's IEP. Even more, somehow the school passed my son to second grade, saying that all the goals were met. No really! The new teacher showed me his math book from first grade, out of 200 or more pages, maybe 20 were given to him. The teacher said, I am sorry but I have to show you what they gave him so you understand that it will be challenging. She also gave me some pages from the math book to help him at home (Hands On, Lesson 2, Chapter 3) first grade. Sheridan is reluctant to move my son to mainstream, at least starting with reading, it is also reluctant to show more interest with the autistic cluster. The principal replied to all parents frustrations with a political letter but not much was done last year. When I asked how they are planning to level my son and recover the time lost, the ESE rep said, we cannot do anything???? Probably as parents, you may know how I feel. Please ask the teachers and directors of curriculum about your children, other things may be important but do not loose focus in your children education. As far as I fought all last years for some simple things to be done, some of them were done...and this year I continue to look for a better school for my son. Public McKay was not granted because the school I requested, it was too far (30 Min from my house). Please make your comments or suggestion and I appreciate your attention to this matter that seems very common for all of us.Jeannette Suarez
Guest guest
Are the goals on your son's IEP goals that are for Gr.2 according to the Sunshine State Standards? If not then I would start there. As for catch up...if he's meeting his goals and his goals are reflecting a grade 2 level then that's what you want. You need to request on the IEP that you want weekly data so you can make sure they are accomplishing his goals. This is the public school system. If they are not doing the right thing, call a meeting and make them accountable. They have to provide data...they just can't give you verbal info....Otherwise have them do an evaluation on him to establish a baseline...then create goals from there. ....I wish a lot of parents were with me yesterday at the first meeting with the teacher for 2nd grade (Sheridan Elementary School). Guest guest
I would re-post this on parent_to_parents Not that all of the parents on this list do not unjderstand what you are going through, because many of us have been fighting the public school system for years, but the list serv I posted above tals specifically about these issues and has some great info on this.
