100 million Nkr donated by rich Norwegian for PSC research

One of the richest men in Norway donated 100 million Nkr (18.5 mill

USD) for research of PSC. But the government didn`t allow him to spend

all the money on PSC, so they had to change the deal. Now it says that

most of the money will go to PSC research. When someone donates money

for scientific research here in Norway, the government has to add 25%

to the given amount. Anyway this should be a nice contribution to the

research of this damaging disease. Between 10-15 persons out of each

100 000 gets this disease here. Approximately 3-4000 people lives with

it.

Hi Arild;

This sounds very exciting. Can you point us to any news articles on

this? I havn't been successful in finding any ... when I do a search

for 'Norwegian PSC research funding', I tend to pick up articles on

Polar Stratospheric Clouds (PSC) rather than on Primary Sclerosing

Cholangitis (PSC).

Best regards,

Dave R.

Hi Marie,

I am in the same boat as you are, I can understand the basic idea of

the articles (I am originally from Holland), but I am not in a

position to translate. It tried to find an autotranslate program that

works, but couldn't find any.

Yes, the money goes to PSC research, but the main issue for the

writers of these articles is not PSC and not the grant, but the fact

that now the Norwegian government is obliged to add 25% to the grant

from its research budget according to the Norwegian law. The

discussion is whether it is fair to give 25 million Norwegian kroner

to a disease that is so rare, just because a private person decides to

give a large grant.

Mr. Hagen gives " private considerations " as a reason. I can't figure

out where he is giving the money to, but it looks like it is going to

Norwegian researchers.

Any way I look at it it sounds like good news. 100 milion Nkris $18.5

million. 125 million Nkr (including the government money) is $23

million.

A friend of mine knows norwegian and agreed with my general

translation after reading the article in the Aftenposten. Since she is

religious and I caught her just before shabbat, we will have to wait

till Sunday (saturday night for you) for she will not do any writing

on shabbat. On Sunday she will be more than happy to sit down and

translate it for us.

Chaim,Thanks for your work with this. It is very exciting that so much money will go to PSC research, up to $23 million. It would be interesting to know the reason why, but I presume this man knows someone who has PSC. Fortunately for us, we will no doubt benefit from this grant, as medical research tends to have universal benefits.Marie

Hi Marie!

Sorry but I didn`t find any translateprogram from Norwegian to English.

Stein hagen has personal reasons for donating these money to PSC

research, and was supported by his children to do so, according to

information the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten has . Stein Hagen

himself, doesn`t want to say why he has donated these money for PSC

research. First he wanted all the money to be spent for this research,

but the University who was to receive these money disagreed, and made

changes to the deal. The final agreement said that a major part of the

money should go to PSC research. Reasearch minister Tora Aasland

thinks it is OK that most of the money goes to research on a rare

disease.

Would it be possible for a moderator of the group to send Stein

hagen a letter thanking he and his family for donating this money to

PSC research on behalf of this group? Also would it be possible for

members of this group who wish to, have somewhere to put our names and

our countries over the next several weeks, this then could be printed

off and sent with the letter?

I for one am very grateful that this man and his family are donating

this money.

A thought... from the bottom of the world in New Zealand

Hi ;

What a great idea! Although I'm not a moderator of this group, I'd like

to volunteer to write a letter of thanks and add your names, countries

and flags. I'll put it in the next newsletter. So anyone wanting to add

their names and countries, please send an e-mail to

rhodesdavid@... with the information that they would like

included [that's rhodesdavid @ insightbb.com removing the spaces before

and after the @].

Best regards,

Dave R.

Hi , thanks so much for volunteering, what a good idea to put it

in the next newsletter.

I will wait until I read Chaim's part 2 translation and then put the

whole article on our little Australian New Zealand Google Group and

hopefully get more signatures.

thanks so much again
