Guest guest
Some mornings are just so hard!! I dont know how I will make it through some days! My aspie is really going to make me go insane! OR that's how I feel!!!!! Her teacher assigns sentences to write with vocab. She knows all her vocab as english is a very strong subject for her! BUT ask her to make up her own sentences and you would think I was pulling out her nails! OMgoodness. So...of course she put it off till this morning. I asked her last night and she didnt tell me about it. What a huge fight. She had a total meltdown since I wouldnt give her the sentences and she says she cant think up her own. I guess she has been looking up sentences with her words and using those instead of making up her own. The kids can do anything but write creative sentences or paragraphs. I think I am going to have to ask the teacher for an alternate assignment for her...otherwise, I many not survive this year! ahhhhhhh..... Anyone succeed on asking the teacher to swap assignments like this? Any suggestions? I had to give her the stupid sentences to write on the way to school! She knows the words but just cant come up with sentences. This kid is the one that tested over college level in all english areas...she is in 5th grade. I could use any advice before I give up! Guest guest
I don't think there is anything wrong with helping her think of sentences. She clearly is not lazy or defiant she just has trouble with the imaginative part. I think I would set aside time to help her with this one part and make it fun and non-confrontational. You could make it a game and try to make up the funniest sentence or the saddest..... you could try making up half of the sentence and have her finish it. I would make it clear that you can only help if she tells you about it before the morning it's due. I hope this helps.Subject: Some mornings are just so hard...To: sList Date: Thursday, October 6, 2011, 8:28 AM Some mornings are just so hard!! I dont know how I will make it through some days! Guest guest
I would not stress her out like this! This is part of the core deficit! Find another assignment! It is what it is! Guest guest
I second this suggestion. My daughter also struggles with this but I have found, the more I get frustrated the more she does. It is those times when I can remember to approach it in a more creative and gentle way that she usually can make this work. The trick is just setting aside the time for this and not trying to have her do it when you cant support this work. Having 3 children - this is the hardest part for me. Guest guest
I used to give my son some examples and he would copy them down. Then I would make him read the sentences five times each. Or I would verbally start the sentence, and let him finish it. If you sit there and expect her to come up with everything on her own, you will be there until kingdom come. Face it, that's part of the brain that doesn't work that well. So what. They excel BEAUTIFULLY in many other areas. My son still hates coming up with sentences, but he learned them over time. Some things you just can't force them to learn on our timelines. Each one of our children learn on their own individual schedules. Don't let that ruin your morning. CHEER UP. Tomorrow's Friday. ] All moms deserve a glass of wine on Fridays.... Guest guest
Give her sentence starters and writing prompts. It is ok to help her brainstorm ideas, she just needs help with organization. Have her teachers put homework for her in a folder each day so the first thing you guys can do is pull out the homework folder and go over everything that has to be done first thing in the afternoon. That will eliminate some of the last minute scrambling which causes stress levels to rise. Some mornings are just so hard... Some mornings are just so hard!! Guest guest
This is why we stopped the homework! Our son used to have homework from main-streamed classes that was just too, too much for him to handle. It reached a point where we decided to stop it as we didn't want him to stop wanting to go to school! He actually told us some days that he didn't want to go to school any longer as he "knew" there would be more and more homework each day. He's a "planner" and therefore, he would anticipate the week's worth of homework and become overwhelmed on Sunday night when it came time to get things ready for Monday morning. This might not be the right solution for everyone, but it helped our situation a lot - he even agreed to work harder and complete all assignments at school if it meant NO MORE HOMEWORK. He's the type of person that will wake up early in the morning, ready to go, and work hard all day toward having that "me" time in the afternoon after school so he can relax and decompress! Guest guest
Try giving her a second wword to go along with the first word and have her then make up a sentence using the two words. Of course the words have to have a common thread. > > Some mornings are just so hard!! I dont know how I will make it through some days! My aspie is really going to make me go insane!
