Autism Community Store Opens Retail Store in Denver!

Our new store will offer the same useful and hard to find products as our website in a family and sensory friendly store

On August 21st, the Autism Community Store will open the doors to our retail store in Denver, Colorado. The grand opening celebration will take place Saturday, August 21st and Sunday August 22nd, from 10-5 and will include free Gluten Free hot dogs Saturday and a bounce house on Sunday! The Autism Community Store is located at 7800 E. Iliff Ave., Suite J, Denver CO 80231.

We will be among the first brick and mortar stores in the country to address the particular needs of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and those with challenges related to communication, play, sensory processing and social interaction.

Our goal is to bring as many products for children with Autism as possible together under one roof in a space that is comfortable for our kids and meets the unique needs of our community. The new retail location will allow us to be a more integral part of the local autism community, while continuing to serve the larger community through our online store.

In 2007, Don Fortner explained his motivation for starting the Autism Community Store with his daughter,

From the outside, it would be hard to imagine how a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder can change everything in a family.Like so many families these days, we have sacrificed, grieved and often celebrated. I've watched my daughter struggle to figure out what treatments are appropriate and necessary for her daughter (ABA, VBA, OT, speech, music, biomedical, a special diet?...), at the same time she faces the daily challenge of meeting her daughter's basic needs and somehow getting enough sleep to get up the next day and do it all over again.

I have marveled at my daughter and at the community of resourceful parents who will go to the ends of the earth on this journey to get their kids what they need. The Autism community Store was founded to help my daughter, all the parents like her and the teachers and therapists who work with our children. Our goal is to offer a variety of products that meet the unique needs of our community, all in one place. For all those people who will go to the ends of the earth for our kids, hopefully now they won't have to.

In MemoriamA year ago, Don Fortner, Co-founder of the Autism Community Store, lost his battle with cancer. A daughter lost her best friend, business partner and biggest supporter, grandchildren lost the person who most loved them for who they were, and the Autism Community lost a quiet force of empathy and respect. The Autism Community Store grand opening is dedicated to him.

I'll definitely check this out next time we're in Denver. We just got back a week ago.
