Parent to Parent: An Exclusive Interview with Eustacia Cutler, Mother of Temple Grandin

Imagine interviewing a pioneer in Frost style about her journey with her daughter, Temple Grandin. While I may have dated myself, it is exciting to think that during the USAAA 2011 World Conference and Expo in Seattle this week, I will be doing exactly that opposite Eustacia Cutler. This interview is a one-of-a-kind opportunity that Eustacia Cutler has granted to USAAA's conference attendees.

As the mom of a young adult on the spectrum, I am eager to learn more about the woman behind Temple Grandin. What did she do to inspire her daughter to rise above the challenges of an autism diagnosis at time when real treatment resources didn't exist? How did she face the stigma of an era that considered autism the result of poor mothering?

When I first heard Temple speak in the mid 1990's, I knew that standing right behind her was an amazing and supportive mother. I wondered what kind of woman her mother was, and how she succeeded in laying the foundation for Temple to grow beyond the limited expectations that others had set for her. I was curious about what drove Eustacia, when others advised her to institutionalize her daughter.

Eustacia and Temple have provided our family with inspiration. I owe part of my daughter 's success to Eustacia and Temple. When I was in doubt about direction, I thought to myself, "What would Eustacia do?" Then I would remind myself that I had more resources at my disposal than Eustacia; and like Eustacia, I would set up the support and foundation for my daughter's success. That foundation allowed to build on her strengths in her quest towards reaching her full potential.

My own experience with my daughter is a journey that is far from complete. But, what mother's journey ever ends (as I am quite certain Eustacia will attest to during our "One-on-One" interview on Saturday afternoon, October 29 at the Holiday Inn Sea-Tac Airport Hotel)?

About Theresa K. Wrangham

Theresa became a parent advocate as a result of her daughter Deanna's life-threatening asthma, as well as her daughter 's diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder. As a former AMTA massage therapist and Usui Reiki master, she views health holistically and brings an experienced parent's perspective on raising a healthy children affected by asthma and ASD to her advocacy work. She lives in Colorado with her husband of over 21 years, .

In 2001 she co-founded the Autism Society of Boulder County (ASBC) in Colorado and served five terms as its president and, served on the Board of Directors for the Autism Society of Colorado. She is currently the Executive Director for NVIC. She serves on advisory boards for the US Autism & Asperger Association and the American Medical Autism Board and is a representative on the Boulder Valley School District Special Education Advisory Committee in Colorado.

Theresa has presented at USAAA World conferences. USAAA is very fortunate to have Theresa moderating the panel workshops at the USAAA 6th Annual World Autism & Asperger Conference in Seattle, Washington October 27-30.
