The finding is the first to demonstrate a genetic mechanism at play in the development of the neurodevelopmental disorder among some children -- offering the possibility of a genetic test for some women at risk for having a child with autism, said Judy Van de Water, an immunologist and the study's co-principal investigator. Guest guest
I suspect that the mainstream media LOVES to propogate information such as this because natural remedies such as dietary intervention to not make any $ for pharmaceutical companies. Guest guest
I read the article and walked away knowing that the trial was not near long enough to prove anything. Casein and gluten have been known to stay in the body for months so any scientific trial like this would have to go on for much longer than a month. It would need to be a study for at least 3 months probably more like 6 months to be accurate. I am glad they are at least looking at the connections between the gut and the brain, maybe the next study will be done right. Guest guest
This study states: Fourteen children who were put on the GFCF diet for at least four weeks were then given snacks containing gluten, casein, both or neither Do we know how the diet was done and if it was followed meticulously? And how can 14 children from a spectrum disorder represent the majority of the whole. There are hundreds and hundreds of children with autism on every continent in the world. Now 14 children have determined that this diet is no remedy for autism. I'm sure we can find 14 random children with autism that won't do well on certain supplements, or drugs, sensory therapies,or behavioral therapies,.educational interventions.. pick your choice of subjects pertaining to autism. This is what happens when you have a spectrum disorder. What might be good for one is not for another. Do a full study documenting exactly what these children are eating for the entire month on hundreds of children with autism and let's see the results so the study can be at least credible. Once again this is a perfect example of how studies can be screwed for a variety of reasons. And yet these studies always seems to surface making front page news for autism. If there's money to be made...everyone will be behind it...if not.... The bottom line is there is no magic bullet, but the GFCF diet is a way of allowing the immune system to get a chance to kick in and work. You can't heal the body/mind if you are shoveling in what the body is reacting to. Some kids have dramatic changes; others do not...but either way it gives an opportunity for healing to take place. Healing the gut is the first step in healing the body and brain. These people can think what they want. The proof is in the pudding and parents know the truth. They don't need a study... http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Autism/gluten-free-casein-free-diet-remedy-autism-study/story?id=10690766#.TqBmdMuvwxI.facebook , see if this link works, it's from Facebook To: sList Sent: Sunday, October 23, 2011 1:16 PMSubject: Re: SchaferAutismReport: Genetic Variant And Autoantibodies Linked To Having A Child With Autism Hello , will you post this article here so i can read it? Guest guest
Amen !!!! You are right on! I will FOREVER be a cheerleader for a GFCF as well as soy free diet as our formerly non verbal son began speaking just 28 days after we started the diet! I cried BIG tears of joy!! And yes, I know results vary greatly, but putting less stress on the digestive system frees up energy to be used in other bio chemical processes as well...just a whole host of other benefits!! The food choices we make are HUGE!!! Not a single person on the planet no matter how many degrees they have after their name or studies under their belt can EVER tell me this diet has no merit! RESEARCH Genetic Variant And Autoantibodies Linked To Having A Child With Autism Finding may lead to screening test to identify susceptibility to having an autistic child news-medical.net A study by researchers at UC has found that pregnant women with a particular gene variation are more likely to produce autoantibodies to the brains of their developing fetuses and that the children of these mothers are at greater risk of later being diagnosed with autism. The finding is the first to demonstrate a genetic mechanism at play in the development of the neurodevelopmental disorder among some children -- offering the possibility of a genetic test for some women at risk for having a child with autism, said Judy Van de Water, an immunologist and the study's co-principal investigator.
