Guest guest
My son who turned 20 in June wil be moving from the peds gastro to the adult gastro division soon. Although both divisions have heps in the same department, and he was under the gastro person when under peds, I feel that the PSC is more serious than the UC and so the primary consult should be the hepatologist. What do others think about this? I appreciate all input. Thank you. Rita (Florida) son diagnosed with both PSC and UC and possibly Gilbert's syndrome. Guest guest
I would probably work with both on a team that works well together. My son has PSC and short bowel syndrome so he will always need pretty intense involvement form a GI but definitely needs the monitoring of a hepatologist also. His primary care is manged by a short gut GI specialist but the hepatologist is monitoring what he does too. I am curious what your son's labs look like w/ 'possible Gilbert's' My son does have Gilbert's- confirmed by genetic testing only done in Chicago but for the longest time the elevations in unconjugated bilirubin levels when he had obstructive episodes- (13 ERCPs for common bile duct obstructions) was very confusing to his doctors. Some doctors kept dismissing his jaundice as 'just Gilbert's too so it has been a frustrating (because it is confusing to docs) diagnosis to add to my son's mix. I know on it's own Gilbert's is benign but unconjugated bilis shouldn't be ignored in my opinion when you also have liver disease. Guest guest
Lori, My son has never been tested for Gilberts just that his GI doctor said with his bili always slightly high, it must be that. Actually we have also been told that he may have AIH. Again nothing done to confirm it. I always wish that tests to check on all these will be done. Guest guest
Our son saw the same per hept for 7 years. When it was time for the tx he was 19 and because I was 49 and the donor his tx had to be done at a different hospital entirely. The peds hospital made all the arrangements and I was thrilled with the new people. It is hard when you have worked with people who have kept your son alive to suddenly trust someone else but have faith.
