Guest guest
Hi all,I was diagnosed with gastritis last Friday, but not given any new meds, since I'm already on Flagyl for pouchitis (I have a j-pouch). I'm also on immuno-suppressants for autoimmune hepatitis. One urgent care doctor suggested that I might not get fevers because of the immuno-suppressants. Well I have a fever ranging from 99.1 to 100.1. I normally run between 97.2 to 98.5 (sometimes even lower). And I'm pretty weak, but I can walk around a little, although most times I"m laying down. Even sitting seems kind of strenuous. My question is, at what point should I be really worried, and go to urgent care or the ER? Can I wait until I have a fever of 102, or should I go before?MariePSC 2006, AIH 2006, UC 1970, J-pouch 2005, pouchitis 2006, toxic megacolon 1977; gastritis - last week. Guest guest
Marie, If it were me I would probably go to the ER, better safe than sorry. Since you are on immunosuppressants you are such a high risk for serious infection. Take care, keep us updated. Guest guest
Hi Marie; Did your doctor tell you what type of gastritis you have? One possibility would be Helicobacter pylori gastritis. If it was this type, I would be concerned that Flagyl (metronidazole) might not be working on this bacterium because there have been reports of Helicobacter pylori becoming resistant to metronidazole, at least in the U.K.: Euro Surveill. 2007 Jul 1;12(7):E3-4. Surveillance of primary antibiotic resistance of Helicobacter pylori at centres in England and Wales over a six-year period (2000-2005). Chisholm SA, Teare EL, Davies K, Owen RJ. PMID: 17991408. Do you think it might be worth switching to a different antibiotic? I would recommend going to urgent care or the ER if the fever continues and you feel yourself getting more sick. Do you have someone to take you? If you don't have anyone to take you, maybe you should try to get yourself to the ER sooner rather than later. Best regards, and good luck, Dave R. > > > Hi all, > > I was diagnosed with gastritis last Friday, but not given any new meds, since I'm already on Flagyl for pouchitis (I have a j-pouch). Guest guest
Thanks for the replies. I can call my sister-in-law to take me to the ER or urgent care. I talked to her earlier, and since it's a low grade fever, she suggested waiting until morning and if I still have it then get a same-day appt. to see a primary care doctor, as well as calling the hepatologist. The doctor didn't specify the cause of the gastritis. I was recently treated for helicobacter pylori, and after treatment I tested negative, but I know it can come back. I'm going to keep checking the temp. If it reaches 101 I'll probably go to the ER. I'll also keep drinking lots of water.Marie To: From: rhodesdavid@...Date: Thu, 13 Dec 2007 04:31:32 +0000Subject: Re: Fever & weakness - when to go to the ER???
