Guest guest
OK, I normally have pretty bad nausea and have a hard time eating. But, this week, kind of last week and this week, but especially this week, I am just constantly starving...and I mean very, very, very hungry as in very extremely abnormal hunger pains. And I can't make them go away. I will eat a LARGE amount of food, more than I've eaten at once in a couple of years, and 10 minutes later, I am hungry again. I cannot believe how much food I have eaten this week to try and make this hunger pain go away, but it just won't. Also, my hair has been breaking extremely badly the past couple of weeks. Every time I brush my hair, my brush is FULL of hair. I've tried to think that maybe I'm missing a nutrient or something since I normally don't eat much, but I've been eating a large variety of food, and it is still getting worse every day. And yet, in spite of eating sooooo much food, I've lost 7 pounds this week! I have a doctor's appointment next week, but I am perplexed, I have never heard of this happening before and have certainly never had it happen to me. Has anyone experienced this? ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ Never miss a thing. Guest guest
Hi ; This could be a sign of a thyroid problem. For example, hyperthyroidism can be associated with increased appetite, weight loss, and hair loss. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000356.htm But there may be other causes. It would definitely be worth talking with your doctor about this next week. Best regards, Dave R.
Guest guest
One year I had a hyper active thyroid, such that I could eat as much as I liked and I would not gain weight. The down side of that was I got extremely winded after mild exertion (walking up a hill). Ian (51) PSC 89 OK, I normally have pretty bad nausea and have a hard time eating. Guest guest
I would definitely ask the doctor to do a thyroid panel. And ask for your TSH *and* Free T4 to be checked, otherwise they will likely check ONLY your TSH, and that doesn't always give an accurate picture if you are borderline hyper- or hypo- thyroid. The Free T4 is actually the more accurate indicator of thyroid dysfunction. is hypothyroid, though we did go through a short peroid on coming home when he suddenly started absorbing well and he became hyperthyroid so we had to decrease his synthroid dose. Guest guest
wow, I didn't think about a thyroid thing. this is making total sense, now. I have been having some pain in my throat/neck for quite a while, but I've just dismissed it. You know, when you have so many symptoms from health problems, it's so easy to just dismiss something new unless it is very bothersome. I've had some difficulty swallowing and choking on my food, but I have MS, so I just thought it was related to that and again, didn't think too much about it. But, as soon as I read the word thyroid on here, I realized that pain is exactly where my thyroid is...and I thought it was a "throat" pain, but, I just pushed all around that area and realized it hurt to push on the left front side of my neck right there, but not on the other side, and pushing on it gave me the exact same kind of feeling when my "throat" has bothered me off and on. Yeek, I need to go to the doctor. Thanks for your input, this really didn't occur to me. This is really weird OK, I normally have pretty bad nausea and have a hard time eating. Guest guest
That makes even more sense, then. Very likely your thyroid is enlarged. So even if you can't get in to see your doctor soon, you could call and ask your doc to order the thyroid tests and just go in to the lab and call for your results the next day. (Even in our little hick town clinic, they're back the next day.) Symptoms of hypothyroidism: FatigueWeaknessWeight gain or increased difficulty losing weightCoarse, dry hair Dry, rough pale skinHair loss Cold intolerance (can't tolerate the cold like those around you)Muscle cramps and frequent muscle achesConstipationDepressionIrritabilityMemory lossAbnormal menstrual cyclesDecreased libido Symptoms of hyperthyroidism: PalpitationsHeat intoleranceNervousnessInsomniaBreathlessnessIncreased bowel movementsLight or absent menstrual periodsFatigueFast heart rateTrembling handsWeight lossMuscle weaknessWarm moist skinHair lossStaring gaze (Taken from http://www.endocrineweb.com/ ) Hope this helps somewhat. And yes, it is difficult to distinguish symptoms when you have multiple conditions. was hypOthyroid, but did not have weight gain. He was grossly underweight because of his lungs being so damaged and his PSC and malabsorption and such. We only found his thyroid condition because his thyroid was enlarged, which caused the cardiologist to order a thyroid panel. We had to watch his thyroid numbers very closely this past couple of years because we couldn't monitor his status by symptoms due to his myriad of other conditions. You might want to keep that in mind if you are diagnosed with one or the other and there are several overlapping symptoms. Guest guest
Thanks for the info. I called my doctor's office and talked to my doctor's nurse. I have an appointment schedule for next Friday anyway that was already scheduled for my monthly appointment. So, they're having me come in early in the morning to have blood drawn, so hopefully, it will be ready by the time my appointment is in the afternoon. If not, they can call me and we can go from there. Thanks again This is really weird OK, I normally have pretty bad nausea and have a hard time eating.
