IEP Meeting

Hi Everyone:

I very seldom write, but I have learned so much from the comments/suggestions

from this group and I hope that I can get some input for my issue. Today I feel

sooo sad and I hurt! My daughter is in Pre-K for the second time (the first

time she was in a self-contained classroom and now she is in a

reverse-mainstream classroom)and she is in a new school this school year. Her

teacher seems to have NO regard for her GFCF diet. I have spoken to her in two

occassions and both times I feel like she makes up lame excuses as to why she

continues to feed my daughter food she is NOT to have, even though I always send

special snacks for my daughter. I also feel like she doesn't care. Any time I

ask for input as to how my daughter's day went, she always says she is too busy

and can't watch all the kids and everything they do. I have been a teacher and

never did I tell a parent I didn't have time for their child. She has a small

class (13-kids) and a full-time assistant. I have requested an IEP meeting, but

I'm not 100% sure as to what my rights are? Can I request to change my daughter

to another teacher? Also, we have a private behavior therapist that works with

my daughter who is very concerned about the lack of progress my daughter is

having in this new class. Am I able to bring the therapist to the IEP meeting?

What and how do I say that this teacher does not seem to have my daughter's best

interest at heart? I feel so sad and mad...how can a teacher teach ESE and not

care! I HATE that my daughter CAN'T tell me how her day went? My daughter

CAN'T say if she was treated well or not! It makes me so sad and mad all at the

same time. Please, share any thoughts...I would so greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Christy

Hi Christy! You can let the ese specialist know that u will be bringing ur therapist yes. Did u already receive the letter w dates?I would recommend strongly u take an advocate w u. I hate when this things happen with teachers... I had lived sth similar w my son few years ago and I had no idea of anything at the time so when I read things like this, in general about not caring or not loving people, I just feel they r still in stone age. So let me know if you have a date and time already and if you would be interested in taking an advocate with you. This person would support you advocating for the best interest of your daughter. Things like the diet should be put in the iep and if so the teachewr would have to obey whatever iep states. Same w reports. U can tell u need daily or weekly reports sent home.If you want an advocate there are two great organizations here in Broward (are u in Broward?) One is FND and the other is UCP. You can choose any of those as they are like sister agencies receiving the funds from same source to provide services to our parents. If you would like contact info for them let me know. I have had an advocate from FND for years thanks God and I was so happy. Now I myself am becoming an advocate to assist our parents at UCP.So pls advise and know you are not alone :)Warmly, Fabiola Sent from my BlackBerry® on the MetroPCS NetworkSender: sList Date: Sun, 30 Oct 2011 02:45:57 -0000To: <sList >ReplyTo: sList Subject: IEP Meeting Hi Everyone:I very seldom write, but I have learned so much from the comments/suggestions from this group and I hope that I can get some input for my issue. Hello Christy,So sorry things have been so rough...Yes, bring it up at the IEP that your daughter's diet MUST be followed by the school, let them know she's allergic and that the school will be held responsible should you find out she's been fed outside her diet.Teachers and assistants can be quite lazy about following the diet (yeah, yeah...I know I'll hear all about how hard it is to follow it in the classroom, how busy teachers are, yadda, yadda...) It's your child's health at stake and it's in the IEP, so they need to follow it!You should inform the person responsible for setting up the IEP meeting that you will be bringing your therapist and give them her name. You have the right to bring someone to the meeting, even a friend to accompany you.If there's lack of progress, ask for a report showing otherwise, or ask what steps are being taken to remediate this, and what seems to the cause for it. Add in the IEP that they must send you notes home if the teacher is unwilling (or doesn't have the time) to talk to you about your daughter's day.Write a parent input and send it to them by email in advance and bring copies to the meeting. Let them know in writing what's bothering you. Bring it up at the meeting that it seems that the classroom has too many kids, since your teacher always tells you that she doesn't have time to check what each kid does. Ask if there's another class with a smaller number of students. That will probably piss off the teacher and whip her into shape, and you will sound "clueless", which sometimes works in your favor. Also, see if it's possible for your therapist to do an observation in the classroom.Good luck and I hope this helps...you may contact me off list you want.Sent via BlackBerry from T-MobileSender: sList Date: Sun, 30 Oct 2011 02:45:57 -0000To: <sList >ReplyTo: sList Subject: IEP Meeting Hi Everyone:I very seldom write, but I have learned so much from the comments/suggestions from this group and I hope that I can get some input for my issue. Christy,

Contact your ESE coordinator and tell her you want a set up a meeting (not IEP) to go over a few issues with the teacher. At this meeting you want to request that the following information is written in writing on the IEP:

Your child is on a GFCF diet and that is to be followed scrupulously (bring a doctor's note if possible)

You would like weekly data with worksheets on your daughter's goals - establish a day (Fridays) so this way you make the teacher accountable for moving your daughter forward on her goals.

Tell them you have a home based teacher you hire privately and your home team would like to be on the same page as the teacher, so any issues concerning her goals where she may be having difficulty, to please send home homework/and information so your team can work at home on these goals. In other words you want to be on the same page....home and school. Let the district know this...it makes them more accountable.

Communicate with the teacher in front of the ESE staff that you would appreciate correspondence from her on how your daughter is doing on a daily basis - possibly a sheet with icons outlining what she's done for the day. The teacher can circle what's appropriate.

You mention your daughter is in a class of 13 children. This might not be the least restrictive environment for her and that could also be one of the reasons why you are seeing no progress. If this is an issue, you should voice your concerns at this meeting. Teachers are not required to have your child's best interests at heart even though as a parent we all wish this would be the case. However, THEY DO NEED TO BE FOLLOWING THE GOALS ON THE IEP. If that is not happening, then you have every right to ask the school district how they are going to implement your child's goals? Always put the onus on the school district so they are telling you what they need to do not the other way around. Then they have to commit rather than fight you.As far as changing classrooms, I would leave this issue on the back burner until you resolve the classroom size and the issue of the teacher following what is written on the IEP after you have requested the written changes on the IEP. The whole thing might resolve itself if the classroom size in inappropriate for your child because your child cannot be successful in her present environment. That is what you need to explore. Hopefully the teacher will comply with the diet requests and weekly data. If after a few weeks you do not see any changes; then I would call an IEP meeting. Request the principal be there so you can make the placement changes and request a review of her present goals. If your child is unable to be successful at her present goals then her goals need to be changed and this will automatically change the placement. THE GOALS DRIVE THE PLACEMENT. This would be a justifiable reason for you to request another teacher if her goals are not being met and the classroom size is too large. Remember your daughter needs to be in the Least Restricted Environment and that's what you need to establish if where she is meets that criteria is being met in order for her to be successful at meeting her goals.

Christy, so sorry that ypu have to go through this with your daughter.  In my opinion here are some things you can do.before the IEP meeting:

1.  Sign a release of information at school, allowing your private therapist to make a visit and observe your daughter during her school day.

2.  Take the next step, where the teacher is concern: you already talked to her, now go to her immediate supervisor.   you can write a letter or email to this person with copy to.the Principal.  Make sure to.mention the lack of.communication and how that affects your ability to do follow up at home.

3.  Yes, you can bring your therapist to the meeting as long as you give the school at least 48 hours warning.

Hope this helps a little.  Good luck.

Request Parent Teacher Conference to check with the teacher your daughter progress. Asked for the written material she done in class. Asked for the books and educational method used with her. Study about that method and check with other professionals involved with your child if it is the best method to use with her. Reading teaching method is another area to ask. How they are addressing the benchmarks and standards with her? Your therapist can attend the IEP meeting as other and can provide feedback to the team. If you want her in mainstream you have to push integrated class as soon as possible to facilitate the transition. Sent from my iPadOmayra Matamoros, MHSA, JD

I do not believe you can request another teacher but you can put special dietary

needs in the IEP. The IEP is a legal document.

There are articles on the TACA website you can give to the school so they

understand why your child is on the diet.

I'd also recommend (for any and all pre-k kids who are not yet accurate

reporters) to develop a daily journal using pictures to describe their day. So

each activity will have a choice of pictures that apply to that activity. The

teacher reviews it after every activity and then it goes home with the child to

review with the parents. It's a great tool to help with recall and reporting.

The most difficult part is creating it.

Hope this helps.

Call Cammerata and just take her to the IEP with you...nip it in the bud!! Had I known in pre school I would have fewer gray hairs.

So much time is wasted on meetings and fighting...not enough is about the kids

Pls call me. . If her gfcf diet is not in her iep she does not have accountability. Also the school should pay for it. Thanks. Tonya

Hi,If I were you, I would ask for a parent-teacher conference before doing anything else. I would bring with me my husband and another parent. If this does not work, I would schedule an appointment with the school's administrator.you say she is in pre school, but I do not know if this is the public school or a private. If she is in the public school, I assume she is in a place room. Public schools have program specialists. If this is the case, you need to know her name and then call her or email her.. I can reassure you this will no longer be a problem if you do that. However, if she is in a private school things are very different. BOS at Nova is the only exception as they have a contract with Broward county. Email me privately if you feel the need for it. If you tell me where she is, I can tell you who is your program

specialist. Either way, you can always call broward see and ask who it is. They love to hear from people like you. . Don' give up. This is only the beginning. Get used to solving your problems now by calling the right people. Then let us know here how you fare.Ht

Thank you Carolina! I really appreciate everyone's support and encouragement! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
