A glucose level of 159 isn't all that high especially if you had eaten in the last hour. Your own insulin might not have had time to get the level back down. If that was a fasting number it is a bit high, but not outrageous. It is so easy to monitor glucose levels that there is no reason to suffer the consequences of diabetes. Ask the doc to get an A1C level done. That will give you a number that will indicate your average glucose levels over the last 3 months. It should be 7 or below, and can be done in 5 minutes, with only a drop of blood. This is a time to not stress out over anything- relax and eat normally so you get a real number, not a manipulated low number that isn't valid, because you went a few days eating meat and veggies and no carbs. Glucose level are affected by carbohydrates, not just sugar or sweets. You have to consider fruit, dairy and starches. Read the labels on packages and check the carbohydrate level. Some very healthy foods have very high levels.

Yeah, I hate it when the doctors office calls ME. They just called to say that

my blood sugar

was high on my last blood test and they want to repeat it, fasting. How alarmed

should I be?

It was 159, normal being 70-110.

Thanks,

Hi MizKit,

Thanks for the calming words. I was hoping I'd hear back from you- unfortunately

you

seem like an expert on blood sugar. I'm off to see the Wizard in Boston

tomorrow, but I

don't expect he'd have much to say ahead of the new tests either. I'll ask about

A1C. I

think I might have eaten an energy bar just before going to get the blood drawn

Friday

afternoon.

I checked back on some of my old labs- in June the glucose level was 80

(70-110), and

that was probably right after breakfast. It's never been high before that I've

noticed.

Is PSC a risk factor for diabetes? I have noticed there are a number of

diabetics here, but

thought it was a post-transplant issue, though I'm not sure why. Kate's Deb was

diabetic

pre-transplant, I recall. I don't have any of the obvious risks: no family

history, not

overweight, not eating a lot of sugary foods or sodas.

I should know what's up later next week. It's wonderful to get such quick help

here.

Martha,That's high, but not super high. Hopefully you'd just had something sugary before having your blood drawn. A fasting glucose seems like the next step. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's not diabetes, but if it is, that it can be controlled by diet and oral meds.Marie
