Children in the study who developed autism spectrum disorder (ASD) actually had less exposure to vaccines with the mercury-containing preservative than children who developed normally. The study is the latest of almost 20 studies to find no link between childhood vaccinations and autism. It comes seven months after the first study that linked vaccines and autism -- conducted 12 years ago -- was retracted by the journal The Lancet. The U.K. doctor who published the study was banned from practicing medicine. Cases of autism continue to rise throughout the world. The CDC now estimates that as many as one in 110 children in the U.S. develop ASD, which includes a range of developmental disorders from Asperger’s syndrome to severe retardation and almost total social isolation. CDC Director of Immunization Safety and study researcher DeStefano, MD, MPH, tells WebMD that while the reason some children develop ASD remains a mystery, the focus should now shift to other potential causes. “I don’t think there is much worthwhile to study anymore with regard to thimerosal-containing vaccines and autism,†he says. Vaccines, Thimerosal, and Autism The CDC researchers examined records from three managed care organizations (MCOs) to identify 256 children with ASD born between 1994 and 1999 and 752 children without autism matched to cases by age, gender, and MCO. I want to know why these types of tests are not being given to our kids? Why are they not available? We could make better decisions about getting vaccinations, if we knew our kids true condition beforehand. Guest guest
SaraThese tests are in fact available but you need to specifically request them from specialists like an endocrinologist and geneticist. The tests the DAN!s use are not enough. If an individual does in fact have mito issues they are treatable so it is imperative to dig a little. Unfortunately,if your child does not have seizures or another underlying issue you may have a difficult time getting a doc to order the tests, especially if they have closed their minds to a potential mito/ autism connection. Having said all of this, it may not always be possible to obtain a definitive answer in re mito. Guest guest
" not available in our area yet " is utter nonsense, meant to get you to stop asking. I recently had to get my husband tested for a possible genetic cancer link. The nearest lab that did the test (we live in California) was s Hopkins or Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. I could also have chosen a lab in Europe or South America. They sent us the tubes and a mailing box, we took him to a local lab where they drew the blood and spun it, then mailed it off (for a fee). Any lab can draw blood for a test that has to be sent out. It is in fact, called a " send out " . When you get a lab drawn, your local lab will do the usual routine ones right there. The more esoteric ones take longer to get back because they are send outs. The lab mails it off or sends it by carrier. You can walk into a lab like Quest or Labcorp and hand them the prescription and say " I need a send out drawn " . This is in fact how labs like Great Smokies and others that cater to our kids operate. Many of the tests done for the DAN protocol and others work with labs out of your " area " . For specialized tests there may only be one or two labs in the country who do the test. If they only did them on people in their area, they would go out of business. I guarantee you the local small town lab does NOT do the testing that confirms Down's or Fragile X (or a hundred other tests, some of which you may have thought were routine). Your pediatrician does know about send outs. He may not know which lab does mitochondrial testing, but if he wanted to, he could have found out by calling the local lab who would have tracked it down. Or, any local pediatrician could have picked up a phone and called the closest endocrinologist or geneticist and ask them which labs they use. And every lab is run by a pathologist, who is a WEALTH of information. Pathologists love to talk about what they know (because they are stuck in their labs and don't get a chance to show off how cool their subject is often enough), and any doc can call one and ask for advice on what test to order and how to collect the sample, as well as what the test results mean. Many specialists are like this-- willing to reach out and help a primary care doc. You must have a prescription or lab slip that tells them which test to order and a diagnosis code, and this is obtained easiest at a geneticist's, but if there isn't one in a rural area, a pediatrician call call one and talk to him/her and figure out the best way to diagnose. The NIH site on mitochondrial disorders is below, and as you can see, sometimes the way to get a sample is by muscle biopsy. In that instance, the doc would get the biopsy, and then the lab would send it out. But if the test is available anywhere on the planet, it is available in your area. That does not mean insurance will cover it--you may have to pay out of pocket for the processing and the test. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/bookshelf/br.fcgi?book=gene & part=mt-overview > > I've been asking our pediatrician about it for the past year.
