New ARI Editorial Encourages Dialogue

In

a new editorial in the Autism Research Review International

newsletter, Dr. Edelson, director of ARI explains how

" 2010 has been a monumental year in the autism community in terms of

acceptance of the existence of GI [gastrointestinal] problems. In

January, 26 scientists published a consensus review paper documenting the

research on GI problems in autism (Pediatrics, January 2010) . . .

.. A second landmark study on GI problems was published a few months later

by the Autism Treatment Network . . . . " He goes on to explain how

" much of the research and discussion on GI problems in the past has

focused on children on the autism spectrum. One of ARI’s new initiatives

is to conduct research exploring how various biomedical treatments, such

as GI treatment, might help adults on the spectrum. " Steve then

introduces Dr. Paradiz, who contributes a guest editorial to the ARRI

newsletter on this important topic.

Dr. Paradiz tells us: " The major breakthroughs that have taken place

in GI study since the beginning of this year, mentioned by Steve in his

introduction, make me feel that something exciting is about to happen: a

coming together of the adult and biomedical communities. " She

encourages self-advocates as follows: " I would like to see more

self-advocates help in this endeavor by constructively informing the

biomed community of our concerns, needs and aspirations as people with

autism. "

This is a thought-provoking editorial, which you can read here. We

thank Dr. Paradiz for sharing her insights as a parent of an older child

on the spectrum, an individual on the spectrum, and a professional.

ARI Remembers McGarry-Noack and Her Family

This

year marks the ninth anniversary of the September 11 catastrophe, and ARI

would like to take this moment to honor the memory of

McGarry-Noack, who was killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center in

2001. was both aunt and godmother to an autistic boy and, as

her mother, McGarry, in a recent interview said, " loved her

god child very much. " In the midst of their great loss, the family

asked that any donations in 's memory be sent to ARI. Since then,

we have held and her family in our hearts, and we see this

photo portrait of her hanging in the office every day we come in for

work. Mrs. McGarry will be attending the 9-11 Memorial Service in New

York City this year where she will participate as one of the ceremony

readers honoring those who died by reciting all 3,000 of their names.

Autism Research Institute (ARI) Yahoo Discussion Groups Provide

Helpful Resources

There

are three Yahoo discussion groups/listservs devoted to the ARI/Defeat

Autism Now! (DAN!) approach to treating autism spectrum disorders. The

DAN! approach mostly involves special diets, nutritional supplements, and

the removal of toxic substances. These groups are exploratory rather than

explanatory and are meant as an open forum for information and opinions.

Parents and professionals are welcome to join.

ARI Support: This listserv is a support group for those interested

in the DAN! approach to treatment for autism spectrum disorders. For more

information: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/ARIsupport/.

ARI-OKA (Older Kids and Adults): This listserv is a support group

for those interested in the DAN! approach to treatment specifically as it

relates to adults with autism or the parents of adults or older kids with

autism. For more information: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/ARI-OKA/.

ARI_Recovered: This listserv is a support group for those who have

recovered or nearly recovered their children from autism using the DAN!

approach to treatment. For more information: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/ARI_recovered/.

Current Events: Research Walks and Research Talks

The 6th Annual

Zoowalk for Autism Research is being held in

Phoenix, Arizona, on Saturday, September 25, 2010, from 6:30 – 9:00 AM.

This year’s Zoowalk for Autism Research is dedicated to Dr. Bernard

Rimland, founder and former director of ARI. One hundred percent of

Zoowalk proceeds go to fund autism/Asperger’s treatment research at ARI

and Arizona State University. For more information: www.ZooWalk.org.

ARI/DAN! Conference, October 7-10, 2010, in Long Beach, CA: ARI’s

Defeat Autism Now! Conference has the reputation of providing the latest

information, the kind that reduces roadblocks in individuals with autism

and pries open the door of possibility and hope. That’s why thousands of

parents and professionals have attended our conferences over the past 14

years and why many will be joining us next month at our fall 2010

conference. We hope you can join us too. With leading experts from around

the world, hands-on learning opportunities, and CME-approved seminars

from licensed healthcare professionals, these must-attend events should

be on your calendar. But the presentations are only part of the reason to

attend—time with others who are engaged in the same journey is

invaluable. For more information: www.DefeatAutismNow.com.
