This is unbelievable to me that no one would step up and find this, what kind of world do we live in. What can we do to ensure ths does not happen again.....I am very saddened for this family and the whole system especially since come January 1, 2008, my work insurance is switching from United Healthcare to Cigna and my 10 year old has PSC and UC.....

Health Insurer's U-Turn Too Late For Girl

From Sky news

A 17-year-old girl has died just hours after her health insurance

provider finally agreed to pay for a liver transplant.

CIGNA reversed their decision after mounting pressureNataline

Sarkisyan passed away on Thursday night at UCLA medical centre in

California, US.

Her insurance firm had initially refused to fund the operation

before reversing its decision and promising to cough up for the

procedure.

But the last minute u-turn came too late for the teenager and her

mother blames the company for Nataline's death.

She had been in a vegetative state for weeks, said her mum Hilda.

" She passed away, and the insurance (company) is responsible for

this, " she insisted.

Nataline had been battling leukemia and received a bone marrow

transplant from her brother.

But she developed a complication that caused her liver to fail.

Doctors at UCLA determined she needed a transplant and sent a letter

to insurer CIGNA on December 11.

But the Philadelphia-based health insurance company initially

refused to fund the operation.

From the news article I read on MSNBC, the girl had been in a vegetative state

for several weeks. There was a 65% chance of a 6 month survival. I don't think

we really know enough about this particular case to fully judge it. Although

it's obviously despicable for the insurance company to get in the way of the

transplant, if the doctors recommend a transplant. It would be interesting if

criminal charges can be brought against the insurance company. Quite frankly, I

wouldn't mind seeing that happen. It's been my experience that corporations tend

to be more cautious if criminal charges can be brought against them. Marie

It is sad that this young lady has passed away. I agree that it

seems there are more to this story than just what is being shown on

the news.

I would not pretend to know what the answer is for our healthcare

system is but most of my family lives in Canada and universal

healthcare is not the greatest either. They pay over half of their

income into taxes, and still pay a monthly premium for healthcare.

There has been times that family has come to the USA for treatment

and payed for it out of their own pockets because the wait list just

for what we consider routine test like MRIs etc.
