Guest guest
I think Floranada Elem. has a preschool program. My sons went there from 1st-5th grade. We were happy there. You always have options and you should look at each one.To: sList Sent: Tue, November 1, 2011 5:03:07 PMSubject: New 2 Group-Need Advice Re: Place Program/Similiar Programs- Coral Sprs/Parkland I want to thank those who have responded already and to encourage more people to comment further. It is through these comments that I am helping to educate myself. My child was evaluated by Broward County on Thursday. They would not say anything about placement until they scored the tests they gave her. I will know more on Nov. 17th. At that time, they told me they will tell me what my "options" are. From what I understand, if she qualifies for a place program, I dont have any options and they tell me where she will go- is that true or not? Also, I have been told that because I live north of commercial blvd., she cannot go to Baudhuin. If that is something that can change if I fight I would like to know that too (just so I know what my options are). My next question is, even if she does qualify for some kind of preschool type program, will they also provide seperate speech, behavior and/or any other kind of therapy like physical/occupational therapy or if they give you a school placement that is it and you are on your own for everything else???? > > ok, Baudhuin has over 150 preschoolers with autism. And last I heard there were 18 different classrooms. Generally, and compared with place or complex place, you will find the best of the best staff at Baudhuin. The problem may be that you are not in their area and may not be able to place her there. If they tell you that, do not give up. This is the best place ever. I know many of their staff members. Staff members who do not perform adequately are usually asked to take a hike, and new people are hired. > Yes, it is a self contained place, meaning that the kids there cannot mainstream. However, I think that at this point in her life she is very young and mainstream is not all that important yet. Find other places for her, during weekends, to meet with typical developing kids. For now, go visit Baudhuin. You owe it to yourself to just see the place. > > Ht >
Guest guest
My son went to the place program for 2 years (Hawkes Bluff, then Sheridan Hills). I'm a big advocate of integration for too many reasons to list here. If you want to call me I'd be happy to talk with you and tell you my experiences with schools, therapies, fighting for services through the school board and insurance, etc. I'll send you an email with my number. Shiri > > My child who will be 3 years old in a few months has been diagnosed with a significant expressive speech and language impairment and may be on the spectrum (early evaluations by a neurologist and psycholgist state that at this point her symptoms do not qualify her to be on spectrum but ultimately she may be). She is being evaluated by Broward County Schools shortly. I am aware generally of the different broward programs, e.g., place, complex place, pepper, am/pm, etc.., but I am trying to find out where are the best " place " programs in coral springs or parkland or even if place is the proper program or if their is another program where there is a significant emphasis on speech and language and social communication. Any help would be greatly appreciated, since this is all so completely overwhelming. >
Guest guest
You will go through an IEP process (individualized education plan). My suggestion is that you find an advocate to help you through this whole process and to go with you to your next meeting. The advocate will protect your child's rights and get the best available for your child's needs. To: sList Sent: Tuesday, November 1, 2011 5:03 PMSubject: New 2 Group-Need Advice Re: Place Program/Similiar Programs- Coral Sprs/Parkland I want to thank those who have responded already and to encourage more people to comment further. Guest guest
I had a similar situation in which my child was placed in the "Complex Place" program at a broward school without anyone telling me that she would not be getting separate speech and behavioral therapy other than a language based environment. So, Please request for these additional services as they help a lot. I had to find these resources on my own for my child as they were not offered to her and were requested of me by the classroom teacher. Please do not expect too much from the public school as they are not capable of meeting the needs of our children. My child has been in the school system for the past two years. All the best to you and your child.
