Guest guest
I'll give the same advice as before. If it was me, I'd go to the ER - that's what my hep told me to do. You could easily become septic (it's happened twice to me), which is much harder to treat and can be fatal. Granted it may be an inconvenience to the physician(s), but it could be fatal to you. Symptoms of sepsis are often related to the underlying infectious process. When the infection crosses into sepsis, the resulting symptoms are that of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS): general inflammation, fever, elevated white blood cell count (leukocytosis), and raised heart rate (tachycardia) and breathing rate (tachypnea). Secondary to the above, symptoms also include flu like chill. The immunological response that causes sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response causing widespread activation of inflammation and coagulation pathways. This may progress to dysfunction of the circulatory system and, even under optimal treatment, may result in the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome and eventually death. I don't mean to scare you, but it certainly scared me! I never had a fever during cholangitis episodes either (sure had the chills). Guest guest
I'd start taking the cipro, your symptoms are a precursors to a fever. If you get on the cipro now you maybe able to head off the fever but even if you don't (head it off) you've already got some medicine in your system to start the healing process. Praying you and your family have a great Christmas. Ian (51) PSC 89 I know I've posted about this a few times since September but I'm just confused. I had my first cholangitis episode early september, 3 weeks after an ercp. Well i've been having issues on and off since then. I saw my hepa again late october and had the ultrasound and usual blood work. My liver and sleen are still enlarged (no surprise there) and my lft's are elevated but not bad (alk phos only 190 something). Well, once again, for about a week i've been having a lot more pain (darvocet doesn't touch it) and nausea and very pale colored stools and stomach cramps. I get chills sometimes but no fever. I'm not sure what to do??? Hepa doc gave me a script for cipro and said to start taking it if I get a fever and call him after I've been on it for 10 days. I don't want to call and bother them again. I kind of wish I'd get a fever just so I'd know for sure, either that or have everything go back to normal. What would you do? Should I just take the cipro and see if it gets better? I know you aren't medical doctors and stuff but most of you have went through this. Thanks and Happy Holidays everyone!!! PSC 8/07PBC 10/06 -- Ian Cribb P.Eng. Guest guest
, I had the same conversation with my Hep at Baylor, because I to go thru these " spells " too. My Alk Phos is in the 500's and I was told it is part of the disease and as long as I am not running a fever they probably won't do anything. Darvoct does not give me much if any relief either. I have found eating a very simple diet and very low fat helps some with the stomach pains and nausea. The pale stools are a sign of your body not being able to digest the fat in your diet. Getting some extra rest and keeping well hydrated seems to help some too. Best Wishes, PSC5/2007, Listed > > I know I've posted about this a few times since September but I'm > just confused. Guest guest
, I understand that the pale stools are because the bile ducts are blocked and bile does not get into the intestines. The bile (bilirubin) gives stool its brownish color. Guest guest
, I agree with Ian, you should start taking the cipro. The rest of this I wrote last night but yahoogroups was having some problems accepting posts, so here it is 10 hours later. Relying on an absolute temperature measurement may not be the best thing to do. A recent poll showed that we tend to have normal temperature readings that are low. A fever of 2 degrees might push your temperature up to 98.6 while the same rise in some one else would result in a " fever " of 100.6 or more. The chills are an indication your body wants to get warmer - that is, to increase your temperature. You shiver, you seek warmer clothes, blankets, etc. This in my mind qualifies as a fever, whether your temperature rises to 101 F or 98.5 F. Of course everyone agrees the higher temperature is a fever and if it was 103 we'd be even more sure. But that doesn't mean that just because your thermometer reading hasn't risen to some arbitrary level that you should deny yourself treatment. I would start it and talk to your doctor in ten days about what happened (take your doc a diary of your daily temperatures and how you feel for that period). Good luck and I hope you feel much better by the new year. Guest guest
Yes, that is true and the bile helps digest the fat in our diets, floaty stools have to with the fat content of them. Guest guest
I'm confused by the concept of a 'floating' stool. When your stool is all liquid, all the time, how can you use this as a judgment? In the past, I could use flagyl or cipro when the stools were so loose I couldn't control them at all, but that doesn't seem to be working any more. I guess that maybe after long-term use, they lose their effectiveness. Is there another medication that might help? I already take 6 ea 2-mg imodium each day, and lots of codeine doesn't slow down my system either. I should probably mention that I had a j-pouch colectomy about 15 years ago. That may account for the lack of 'formed' stools; my small intestines apparently never learned how to compensate, and despite drinking literally quarts of water every day, I still get dehydrated!
