Guest guest
The War Against Compassion (Open Letter) We are told by some we just want others to feel sorry for us. That our parents brought us around town for others to feel sorry for us and that people just pity us. That when people care their intents are pity. I have discovered why these kinds of perceptual manipulations and bullying happen in the autism community. I believe it comes down to abortion politics and compassion has been made into one grand conspiracy to rid the earth of people like me. The group I am most upset with is called the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network (ASAN) who for years has protested and electronically confronted groups and individuals in very confrontational ways. Even some calling nice people Nazi's while claiming people with autism are like Jewish people. I like WWII history and some of this nonsense is to me beyond ridiculous. Every American has the right to freedom of speech and having grown up in a military family moving around the country I not only respect those rights but have the philosophy that someone may say something I disagree with but I'd defend their right to say it. I'm writing to tell you today that ASAN has not earned my trust. And they are not a diverse group of self-advocates and only project views filtered by its ideological leadership. A leadership that freely accuses others and horribly contrives compassion into simple pity by otherwise caring people to get attention. A leadership that has used selective abortion politics to create waves of awareness in ways that I believe are not ethical when combining other issues and alienates the quality of lives of other people for the sake of pride and conspiracy. Effective enough in their tactics they gained a government seat as what elected figures will do at times to ease tensions is to nominate an individual. Demanding from the tax-paying public in protests services money while accusing others of abortion. People are in need of help and I appreciate the services I receive and do not support ASAN in their approach as I believe it to be highly irresponsible and unprofessional. Helping people cannot and should not be achieved with these unethical approaches and demands. When awareness was created about autism isolation they fueled their pride base to simply make it out to be one grand insult and discrimination. Awareness can be done differently especially when people talk things through but they made no attempt in media interviews to help those isolated but in bitterness and in their consistent path of despondent accord made no compromise for those who experience isolation. Pride leadership to me seems very self-centered at times and manipulative. Popular autism pride leadership has thus far been reckless and when opportunity has come about in key moments for inspiring leadership for the truth and balance they failed miserably. How much longer must the Autism Community be in this context polarized by a few who will imagine into the intents of others to gain attention and power for the sake of other kinds of politics like abortion and false beliefs projected into others as facts simple because they say so. I for one am fed up with it and would like the opportunity to tell others people in the media and advocacy groups to empower different and diverse voices in the self and otherwise general advocacy community.
