Guest guest
Cathy, I'm not sure exactly what your point is...but I for one am ever so grateful for the few hours of PCA we get every day through the medwaiver, not to mention the Medicaid. , I agree that every kid with one of the qualifying diagnoses should receive the medwaiver benefits, I am hoping the pending lawsuit will do just that, since nothing else seems to have worked. I have been waitlisted for a long while and I can't imagine how wonderful my life would be if I had assitance from a PCM even for just an hour a day. I believe that it is blatant discrimination that some should be able to get services through the med waiver program while others of us struggle with our everyday existence doing it ALL on our own. That should be the first priority for our community. Re: FCC-10 Sherry and Group Our kids need a lot more than a PCA for 2 to 4 hours so we can live a normal life. Personal Care Assistants are designed for individuals who require limited assistance with bathing and so forth. Personal Care workers provide assistance with everyday activities, such as bathing, grooming, toileting, shopping, cooking, laundry and other daily errands, in order to help an individual stay as healthy as possible. Duties do not include medical activities, such as catheterization or cleaning of medical instruments. Its designed for a disabled person who requires help with Activities of Daily Living that require limited help. Our kids low functioning or High functioning require more than what the state can provide. Sherry we love our kids and this is why we want to fight. We are angry because we try our hardest to maintain a family and we see others who can't imagine what we go through. If the education system says everyone has the right to an equal education. Then everyone should have the right to be admitted to an equal opportunity after school program as well. Then we wouldn't have to r ely on PCA so much. Thats the problem right? Where do we place our kids after school so we can work and provide for our families. this is what we need. For the community we live in to accept our children. I don't think I ever meet you Sherry but the government needs a new law. Don't you think? Milian aka Enzo's mom The local FCC's have the knowledge of what your areas needs are... the chair or someone appointed goes to the state meeting every other month. The next one is January. It is near the Orlando airport. Right now your chair fly's up to the meeting and back; airport. Shuttles to hotel. You can stay one or two nights...this is paid out of your budget...you get $9,000 locally to vote how you choose to spend it. The decisions being made in Tallahassee need family voices... lots of changes are being made and the families attending are families who have older children so the older voice needs are being heard. Right now Tally hears that the school system is fulfilling all the people with disabilities needs under age 22... if this is not true they need your voices.. the voices from families come from FCC's Also from my friend , who is an FCC-chair and also travels to the state meetings. . . . yes you can... The child care staff that does the special needs unit at the park district watches the kids.. your park district should have a special needs contact person... check with special Olympics too see if they want to offer some of their volunteers because they are already screened..also some of your support companies might want to volunteer so they can PR with families for business...respite company support in home company... EVERY FAMILY on the wait list who has a child on Medicaid should be getting PCA 2 to 4 hours of support a day. DID ANYONE ELSE KNOW THIS? Guest guest
Just an update on the med waiver PCA services. It has to be medically necessary and does not include cooking or meal prep. Only activities of daily living - oral care, bathing, dressing, eating. Not for assisting you with going to the physician or community outings. They are extremely strict with this now. Believe me I went through the whole court battle. You need documentation that your child is non functional or needs any assistance - isn't that sad? So, with the progress we as parents have tried to make in helping our children be somewhat independent in their skills it comes back to bite us.Cheryl To: "sList " <sList > Sent: Monday, November 21, 2011 9:45 AM Subject: Re: was FCC-10 now PCA/medwaiver Cathy, I'm not sure exactly what your point is...but I for one am ever so grateful for the few hours of PCA we get every day through the medwaiver, not to mention the Medicaid. , I agree that every kid with one of the qualifying diagnoses should receive the medwaiver benefits, I am hoping the pending lawsuit will do just that, since nothing else seems to have worked. Guest guest
I think the government should be able to enforce the law-IDEA, ADA and the like, AND hold professionals accountable when they fail to follow it.I think parents should be educated when their kids are born and/or diagnosed with what the law is, programs available-and not 3-5 years later by a parent and after you have been rushed through the system that only cares about meeting their fiscal responsibilities.I think our kids should NEVER be segregated in life, whether it is school, community arts, sports or other activities. I think our children should be taught like there is no limit to education, not their ability to be educated is limited.I think WE should never underestimate our kids’ abilities-until things roll right, typical kids are always going to see our kids as separate, ok to bully, ok for teachers to abuse and ok for all to get away with it.Sherry
